In short, I'd like to use the battlemaster discipline from the fighter class instead of the monk's options. I don't think this would be too unbalanced, but I'm no maths whiz. Anyone have any comments?

I would probably give initiating a maneuver a 1ki point cost since at least at lower levels the extra damage beats the usual monk options.

Why not simply mutli-class?  Second wind, action surge, and a fighting style all mesh well with monk.

Otherwise, spending ki for them is fine.  Maybe 1 ki per die size.

Yeah the Battlemaster Ranger.

With Battlemaster, your short rest classes have a little more nova OR the option to continue to long rests with the added resource.  Looking at Battlemaster Monk, a player stares glumly at unused CS dice because they burned their Ki on class features.  IMO, if you assign Ki to power CS, you will nerk the monf...ur nerf the monk.

off topic...a champion barbarian is about 85% possible with multiclassing.  Some MC combos are stonger than single classes...because of MC, whether one subclass is designed for a particular class becomes irrelevant.  The synergy just comes on a little later in the adventurer's career.
