Multiclass Monk/Rogue

My only experience with D&D was with the basic rules back in the early 80'.

I'm thinking about a multiclass character; both Monk and Rogue and I'm pretty set on it being human.  I just wanted get thoughts on this combination as strange as it may be.  The stats I rolled are below.  I could change the numbers around, but again, I need the opinions of the more experienced.

  • ST 10
  • DX 17
  • CO 14
  • IN 11
  • WS 13
  • CH 9

I realize strength is most important for a Monk, but it also doesn't seem to be too important for a Rogue so that is why it is so low.  I was thinking I could mainly stick to using bows and throwing daggger when it combat.  Maybe use a spear to still say far back.

Thanks in advance for you input.

Strength is a dump stat for a monk. No worries, you did right. I actually would always keep it at 8 for rogue and monk unless the encumbrance optional rules were being used. .

I know you rolled for stats. If you had used the point buy i would have told you had too many odd attributes (unless you plan to boost them later there is no point to an odd attribute). With what you have it seems ok.

Not an strange combination, I am planing on being a variant human monk/rogue myself.

You might want to swap CON and WIS if you plan to be unarmored. You would then be harder to hit becuse monks add WIS to AC while unarmored. However if you did that you whould have less Health, so it is a trade off.

Thank you both for your input.

you wont be wearing armor thats the whole point. the whole point with monk is that when you aren't wearing armor you're AC = 10+ your dex AND wis modifiers. And just for the record, asuming the stats you've listed don't include the Racial bonus for humans, I would leave the 14 in CON and use the racial to add +1 to WIS and DEX leaving you with 18 DEX, and 14 CON/WIS. thats a really good starting point for monk.

so for you at level 1 you would have 16 AC.  you should NEVER be wearing armor as a monk, you forfeit this benefit AND your Martial arts and unarmored movement bonuses.

although looking at your first post you seem to have some serious misconceptions about how monks work, if you want to use a bow or a spear leveling monk would be a bad idea.  daggers arent as huge a deal since they will use Monks Martial Arts dmg die if you want them too but the others dont fit with the class at all.

if you want to play a monk/rogue MC then the build most people are using is Way of the Shadow Monk with MC into Assassin Rogue.  It's super stealthy, super mobile, and can do some crazy suprise/first round shenanagins with shadow step and assassinate (you can ensure 4 auto crit attacks and sneak attack die pretty much whenever you wan't).

Just out of curiosity Redrex, what path of Monk are you selecting; Four Elements, Open Hand, or Shadow?  I looked for as much info on this as I could find, but there does't seem to be much out there for monks.  Shadow Monk sounded very stealthy so I thought I'd take that path, but Open Hand does sound bad ass.

I personally find Way of the Open hand kinda boring.

you get the option to buff your flurry of blows attacks with control stuff like prone or push, but that isn't as useful in 5e since getting up from prone doesnt provoke OA's.

you get two nice survivabilty features that make you harder to kill (an improved second wind and Sanctuary self buff), but dont really increase your damage

and you get Quivering palm which is incredible but comes late, and I don't think it makes up for the rest of the class features being lackluster

Way of the shadow is basically the ninja of 5e.

you get a handful of spells you can cast for ki like darkness and silence(this spell is god mode btw), and the minor illusion cantrip

you get Shadow Step which gives you a 60 foot teleport as a bonus action

You get the ability to turn invisible in dim or dark light

and you get the ability to use your reaction to make an additional attack on a target that is within range and being attacked by an ally. this last feature is kinda lame to be honest, but the first three are amazing, and you can MC into rogue for the last 4 levels instead of taking this.

to be honest I'm seriously considering rolling a WotS monk myself, I'm torn between that and a warlock gish atm but the play style seems super fun to me

I think it'll depend on how you want to play. Way of the Shadows adds some utility for an Assassin, but loses out on quite a bit of damage from the Assassinate feature.

Let's assume a Monk 6 / Rogue 3 with +4 Dex. You're hidden 60 ft. away from your target and you Shadow Step and Assasinate with a shortsword. That's a 6d6+4 damage attack with advantage, then another 2d6+4 attack with advantage. Assuming hits, that's 36 average damage. Let's compare a straight Rogue 9 with Sharpshooter and +5 Dex. You're hidden and you Assasinate with a light crossbow. That's a 2d8+10d6+15 attack with advantage. Assuming a hit, that's 59 average damage. That's a pretty big difference.

Now on subsequent rounds it's pretty even. Assuming Sneak Attack, the Monk / Rogue will average 5d6(6d6)+12(16) while the Rogue will average 1d8+5d6+5(15). Numbers in parentheses indicate Flurry of Blows and Sharpshooter. That's 29(37) and 27(37) respectively.

It's all in style. A Mobile Ninja is rad, as is a Sharpshooting Assassin. They just play vastly different.

Danny, I am planning to multiclass soon and add some Assassin levels to my WOTS monk, I was looking at you post above since I was doing the same calculation but I have different results...

I'm working on a Wood Elf Monk/Rogue in AL.  I'll be going Open Hand and probably not picking up enough Rogue to worry about a specialty field; if I do, likely the Rooftop Thief (or whatever it's called).

The character concept is to be the Designated Scout.  I don't need a big attack as much as I need the ability to get in / get out / be unobserved.

So far the character has been a lot of fun to play, and effective at his job.

You want DEX and WIS highest, with a Finesse weapon or Monk weapon you can ignore STR in combat.

I dumped CHR so he's a terrible negotiator; I tend to stay in the back row for that and just say what my team wants to accomplish.

I will be picking up Observant later on so my Passive Perception is high enough to auto-detect most traps &c.  The idea is that he 'knows what to look for' and it is handy to have him in your party.

Never forget Thieves Cant if you need to tell another Rogue something that a third party will find embarrassing (like 'this fellow takes bribes but won't stay bribed').

One thing to keep in mind with Way of the Open hand is that with your flurry hits when you knock them prone it gives you advantage on your attack rolls. That way you don't need surprise or even friends in order to get your sneak attack damage in which can be HUGE.

Also double check with your dm but most people ive talked to agree that martial arts counts as making that weapon finesse for you as it works the same, letting you proc your sneak attack off of weapons that aren't normally finesse.

IF your dm agrees one thing to consider would be putting your best stat in wis, if you take the Magic Initiate feat and go for Druid (I recommend entangling strike as the lvl1 spell, it gives advantage) you can get the shillelagh cantrip, letting you use your wis score as your ability mod for attacks witha quarterstaff.

Have fun!
