Hi everyone.

I enjoy playing Melee/Caster types and in 5e I'm looking to Muticlass into a Death Knight type of class.

So far looking through the PHB I think I'm looking at;

Going for Melee/Caster, Enchanting weapons/others to increase damage, defense's. Uitlity spells for combat and Draining Life, using it as your own.

Race: Gnome? Tiefling? Dragonborn?

Muti Class Options:

- Paladin, Duelist or Great Weapon, Vengeance/Warlock, Fiend?

- Fighter Duelist, Eldritch / Wizard, Necro?

- Wizard, Necro / Fighter, Great Weapon, Battle?

- Paladin, Duelist or Great Weapon, Vengeance / Wizard, Necro?

- Wizard, Necro / Paladin, Duelist or Great Weapon, Vengeance?

- Fighter Duelist, Eldritch / Warlock, Fiend?

I can't really find the right choice... Paladin/Warlock looks like a good combo. Also how many levels in each do you think? 10/10? 14/6? 13/7

What does everyone esle think?

Sounds to me like you want a straight Eldritch Knight. You can select spells at certain levels in utility slots, but their spells give you the basic defense/offense spells (abjuration and evocation). You could go a few levels in Wizard if you want to broaden the spell casting more, but that will hurt your melee progression.

Eldritch Knight really is "Fightter with spells to enhance utility and defense." Pretty much everything you want.

If I was do do this, I'd invest at east three levels into Warlock with Pact of the Tome - the ability to grab Shillelagh and have it fueled by CHA is pretty great; you'll only need CHA and CON to be high. Also, utilizing a quarterstaff  goes right into utilizing Polearm Master.

In addition Warlock 3 gives you Eldritch Blast+Agonizing Blast Combo and lots of Rituals.

I'd go Paladin 5 at minimum for Extra Attack.

So when the DM book is released this class option becomes available? OathBreaker for the Paladin gives them the Death Domain http://ow.ly/i/7qc7s/original?

I don't really want to be evil just Neutral lol.

Paladin/Warlock seems to be the closest thing to a "Shadow/Death Knight" type of character. I have not seen the stats or skills for the OathBreaker, so un-sure what it gets as in Spell casting and abilitys.

With the Paladin/warlock, Fiend. I can Enchant my weapons, siphon life, cast "evil like" protection magic on my self. Could do this also as a Paladin/Wizard,Necro.

Still torn. lol

Oathbreaker to 12, then 4 levels of warlock.

Oathbreaker to 12 gets you 3 ability score increases, 1d8 additional damage on your melee attack, Charisma modifier added to damage rolls, and charisma modifier added to saving throws. Half Elf is a good race here as you can have a 16 Strength and Charisma at level 1, while still having enough points for a good Constitution.

The warlock allows you to learn an invocation that adds your Charisma modifier to damage again, and gives you another feat. By level 16 you will deal 2d6+1d8+15 damage on both of your melee attacks, at-will. You can further augment that through spells like Hex (+d6 damage to all attacks), paladin smite spells, magic weapon, and more. You can cast paladin smite spells with your "rechargable" warlock slots too!

I've given this a lot of thought, as I'm currently running a 5e campaign set in Norrath (EverQuest).

The advice above is good, but if your DM is willing to work with you on some power/spell swaps, you could make a fairly authentic Shadow Knight.

This could be accomplished with a custom Oath with key spells to shape the Shadow Knight like darkness and vampiric touch. Altering the Oath of Vengeance would be a good place to start, as it already has a Channel Divinity ability that causes fear in the target. The capstone ability could lean more towards a brief undead transformation rather than an "angel of vengeance".

Aside from a custom oath, you may convince your DM to summarily swap the Paladin and Warlock spell lists. The way spells are balanced in this edition, straight same-level swaps don't really provide much of a power boost, just a flavor adjustment.

If you don't think your Shadow Knight should be Laying on Hands (and why would he?), then perhaps you could switch this out with the ability to cast Inflict Wounds at the highest appropriate spell level once per long rest.

Finally, change all references to radiant damage with necrotic damage.

There, you have your Shadow Knight, with a little tailoring and DM consent.

Mike mearls isn't the rules guy, Jeremy Crawford is, and he has stated invocations require warlock levels

And neither of them issue offical statements, nor do they probably collaborate with the rest of the design team when issuing their tweets.

That said it's completely irrelevent since one of the founding assumptions is that they refer to character level.

Thanks guys. I was trying to go with Adventure League rules. So Oathbreaker is not allowed yet? I For AL I will try out a: Tielfing - Pally Oath Breaker or Vengence / Warlock Fiend
