Background: Noble (Knight) Feature: Retainers [Her squire is a teenage half-elf girl named Bryn, while her ladies-in-waiting are two teenage human girls named Arveene and Miri. They act as Xanthe's entourage when she goes out on the town.] Skills: History, Persuasion Tools: Dragonchess, playing cards
Personality Traits: I always try to look on the bright side of life. Also, I take great pains to always look my best and follow the latest fashions. Ideal: Compassion. Everyone deserves a little kindness and respect. Bond: My sentient sword, 'Lightbringer', is a family heirloom to which I am bonded for life. Flaw: I'm a sucker for a pretty face.
[Gist: She works hard and plays hard. Think of her as being a mash-up of Qui-Gon Jinn, Captain Kirk, Porthos from The Three Musketeers, and a Tolkien elf.]
Backstory: Xanthe is the illegitimate daughter of Baroness Sariel Meliamne of the Duchy of Ulek. She has never met her father. Despite being a bastard, she was able to bond with her matriarchal grandfather's moonblade, 'Lightbringer'. Accepting that she would never inherit her mother's lands and titles, Xanthe instead sought a life of adventure. She was immediately drawn to the dashing Knights of Luna who frequented Ulekian high society in their self-imposed exile from nearby Celene. Not long after attaining her knighthood, she encountered a primeval grove in the heart of an old forest. She learned much from the fey guardians of the grove and soon after swore an oath to the Ancients and became a fey knight. While Xanthe has since gone her own way, she still maintains ties with the Knights of Luna and is happy to take on dangerous missions for them. Most recently, she accepted a request from her old mentor, Prince Melf Brightflame, to seek out his friend Tenser in hopes of finding out more about the looming threat of the coming Age of Worms ...
Appearance: At 5' 8", Xanthe is quite tall for a half-elf, and she is well-proportioned, weighing in at 142 lbs. A radiant aura of otherworldly beauty emanates from her, and there always seems to be a glint of sunlight on her hair and in her eyes, even in dim light. She considers her armor and weapons to be exquisite examples of elvish arts and crafts and takes great care to keep them looking as shiny and new as the day they were made. In fact, one could even say she considers herself a work of art, since she is so meticulous about looking after her own appearance.
Stats: I rolled 10 11 12 14 16 17. I put the 12 in Str and bumped it to 13 with one of the half-elf's +1s. I also put the 17 into Dex and bumped that up to 18 with the other racial +1 and then increased it to 20 with my first ASI/feat slot. I put the 16 into Charisma, which got bumped to 18 by the racial +2. Lastly, I took the Resilience (Wisdom) feat, which increased my Wisdom to 12.
ASIs/Feats: 1) +2 Dex 2) Resilience (Wisdom) 3) Inspiring Leader
Progression: I would like to get to paladin 15 at least, as I quite like the Undying Sentinel feature. I might go to 16 to get another feat as well. I might take another level of fighter or two - no more than four, though. I want to make sure I can get 5 ASI/feat slots. The DM says that I may find a mount useful in the later adventures, so depending on how much I use it, I'll take Mounted Combatant at some point. Otherwise, I'll take either Sentinel or Shield Master, whichever looks to be more useful at the time.
If, however, I am finding that she's not quite as versatile as I'd like outside of combat, I also have the option of MCing into bard for some more skills and stuff. With that in mind, I'm not going to set anything in stone. I'll see where the campaign takes her.

previous original post Hi guys,
I've been working on making a new 14th level PC for my DM's converted Age of Worms campaign. She's going to be a half-elf MC paladin (Oath of the Ancients). Her backstory is that she is a nobody who inherited a mostly meaningless minor noble title when the last direct heir died.
Part of my goal is to make a defender/tank who is still fairly versatile. The other party members include an elf shadow monk, a dragonborn moon druid, a human evoker, and a dwarf tempest cleric.
Her stats are: STR 13 DEX 20 CON 14 INT 10 WIS 11 CHA 18
The DM is letting me have the following starting gear: - moonblade (+1 atk/dmg, finesse, beacon minor quality) - sentinel shield (advantage on Initiative and Perception) - cloak of protection (+1 AC/saves) - 5750 gp
He also says I can purchase some elf-made mithril plate using 2k of that starting gold. Mithril is great because it takes away the Str requirement and the disadvantage to Stealth, and the elf manufacturing makes it weigh half as much (and adorns it with images of leaves and vines and other growing things, just like Ancients paladins are wont to do). I need to max out my AC as much as possible, since the other PCs in the group all have an AC of at least 20, due to high stats and various magic items.
Now I have to decide whether I want to MC into bard or warlock. Both have their pros and cons.
Option 1: Paladin 10 / Warlock 4 Paladin 10 / Warlock 4 AC 21 HP 112
Pros: - Two 2nd level short rest spell slots - Armor of Shadows (I like the idea of being a hard to hit defender who doesn't look like one) - Beguiling Influence (two more skills!) - Eldritch blast for ranged combat - Aura of Courage - A Great Old One patron could make for some fun inner conflict [the idea would be that she hears voices in her head] - No need to burn 2,000gp on fancy armor - A familiar or 4 extra cantrips
Cons: - Can't use the Defense fighting style with mage armor - Can't use a moonblade as a pact weapon since it's sentient - Can't cast warlock spells with S/M components (or wield a focus) while holding a sword and shield - 4 levels of d8 hit dice
Warlock Spells Cantrips: friends, eldritch blast, prestidigitation 1st level: charm person, dissonant whispers, Tasha's hideous laughter 2nd level: mirror image, detect thoughts |
| #2LeugrenJan 10, 2015 18:29:42 | While I don't have enough experience with any of these classes to provide any meaningful feedback, pukunui, I am really curious to see what you settle on and why. Thanks for posting this. |

| #4BRJNJan 10, 2015 19:07:46 | I like MC Bard more, of the three options. This may be due to I played a v3 Bard and my son is enjoying a v5 Bard.
What Paladin spells are you taking? |

| #15pukunuiJan 13, 2015 14:27:01 | Update: I'm thinking I might just go fighter 1 / paladin 13. That'll give me proficiency in Con saves and the Defense fighting style. Then I can take Resilience (Wisdom) to bump my Wis score up to 12 and get proficiency in Wisdom saves. I'll also take Inspiring Leader and bump my Dex up to 20. Then I'll take three more levels of paladin to get up to 16 for another feat slot, at which point I'll take Sentinel or Shield Master, unless something else looks to be more useful. From there, I might just take another level or two of fighter. If I feel like I'm not getting enough utility out of combat, I could potentially dip into rogue for an extra skill and Expertise. Or a dip into warlock to enhance the fey aspect of the character.
I decided that instead of a sentinel shield, I'd take a +1 shield with the guardian minor property on it (the DM said that was fine). That'll give me an Initiative of +7, which is fine, and my passive Perception will be 16, which isn't too bad. If I'm constantly getting surprised, I can either take the Alert feat later on, or MC into rogue or bard and take Expertise (Perception) or something. Or maybe I'll get lucky and find a Perception-themed magic item. We'll see how we go. Anyway, a +1 shield + mithril plate + a cloak of protection + the Defense fighting style gives me an AC of 23!
Also, I finally found a near-perfect picture:
Just look at that shield! Perfection! The armor's got a nice bit of filigree on it too.
I'm not sure she'll use a mount much, but I'll have find steed prepared most of the time anyway. The DM says he might let me have a pegasus as a mount.
And instead of a lance, she'll have her moonblade.
I might also recolor the hair to be a bit more auburn. |
| #16pukunuiJan 13, 2015 19:55:16 | I've almost finalized my character, so I've updated the OP with the build. I mainly just need to figure out her personality traits (even though we haven't been using them in this campaign, I like to have them anyway, as I find they help me figure out how my character would act). The DM says I can't have a pegasus mount until 17th level, so now I need to decide whether to have just a plain old warhorse or be like Thranduil and have an elk mount. |
| #17DevilbassJan 13, 2015 20:32:23 | Cool character. Sounds like it's going to be a fun campaign - definitely miss my old Greyhawk boxed set. Are your stats still 13 20 14 10 11 18? |
| #18Coredump00Jan 13, 2015 20:37:44 | Heh... I still don't understand a 1 lvl dip into fighter... I would rather just keep it in Paladin. But I guess I don't have to get it, if you just prefer to MC... |
| #19DevilbassJan 13, 2015 21:26:59 | Having two fighting styles is a pretty good reason to dip. I think I would almost always dip into fighter when playing a paladin just to get the defense fighting style (as I would take dueling or GWF at 2nd level as a Paladin). |

| #21LeugrenJan 14, 2015 1:40:09 | I just noticed that you posted your final build. Thanks for doing that! Any chance you could add the character's ability scores to the original post? Also, what made you decide to scrap the bard and warlock builds? |

| #24pukunuiJan 14, 2015 10:58:47 | I reckon Undying Sentinel is a decent "capstone" for a MCed paladin. I'm liking the idea of adding Action Surge to the mix, as well. And as I've said, I may even stop at paladin 15 or 16 and take more fighter levels or even add in some bard or something. I don't want to lock in her progression before I've even started playing her.
Besides, the dwarf cleric has an AC of 22 thanks to her dwarven plate, and I just had to top that, you see.
Anyway, the game is tonight. Can't wait to try her out! |

| #27pukunuiJan 15, 2015 2:33:33 | Just got back. The session went pretty well. Xanthe hit it off pretty well with most of the other PCs. She won a drinking contest against the dwarf cleric, who passed out after the fifth round (Con saves with increasing DCs). She also may or may not have done the dirty with the human wizard, who is reasonably attractive and may now be wrapped around her little finger. And the dragonborn druid sympathizes with her as the previous "new guy". It's only the wood elf monk who's unsure - she has taken an instant dislike to Xanthe, who despite being only half-elven still comes across as superior, since she's half high elf rather than half wood elf. Plus, the monk has almost been wholly overtaken by the cursed evil dagger and is now very standoffish with everyone. This evening, she even beat up a gatekeeper because he said his mistress wasn't home. The rest of the party is plotting to stage an intervention and take the dagger off her by force.
Anyway, the session was probably the first I've ever had with this group that involved no combat. Quite a bit of wine was drunk and we all got a bit silly after a while.
My one complaint with the Age of Worms is that it is rather railroady - we get drip-fed one lead at a time, and sometimes we're left floundering a bit. We had two names to follow up on this session: we found one of the people, who was slightly mad, and when we cured him, he gave us a bit of info but it seemed to be a bit of a dead-end, so we went looking for the other person, only to be told that she'd be out of town for a while (later we found out that she'd conveniently be at the party we've now been invited to). So now we're just cooling our heels - which is fine with my character ... more time to spend on hedonistic pleasures.
I have to say that I'm really enjoying the irony of a paladin who drinks, gambles, and sleeps around. No stuffy, chivalrous, lawful stupid goody two-shoes is she! It's all A-OK as long as no one gets hurt. She's the perfect mix of Phryne Fisher, Qui-Gon Jinn, and James T Kirk.
In summary: I didn't get to use much of what was on her character sheet, but I sure had a helluva lot of fun anyway. And the others even let me do the talking when needed. (I was worried that the other players wouldn't appreciate my bid for the "party face" role, but it seems like everyone except the guy playing the monk is down with that - and he's only resistant to it because of that bloody dagger!)
EDIT: Oh, and the DM revealed early on that the father she never knew was none other than the famous Bucknard himself! Everyone got a bit of a laugh at her expense when the DM had Tenser explain that he reckoned she was "sired" by Bucknard around the time he first became obsessed with finding out about the Age of Worms. LOL. (On a side note, this character is great for me on a personal level, as I tend to get a bit defensive in situations like these, but I forced myself to laugh and play along and it all turned out OK. I didn't end up feeling like the butt of the joke. Plus, the guy playing the monk, who'd laughed the hardest, ended up being the butt of the joke himself after he complained about my PC's vanity only to be told that his deity, Wee-Jas, is the goddess of vanity as well as death. |
| #28LeugrenJan 15, 2015 5:06:08 | Great summary, pukunui, though I have to say that my suspension of disbelief went right out the window the moment you mentioned that some light-weight half-elf beat a dwarf in a drinking contest. What kind of wacky game are you guys running there? Next, you'll be telling me that fighters can kill invisible pixies on a miss! |

| #30pukunuiMay 06, 2015 23:00:14 | Xanthe has just attained 17 level. Here's how she's looking now:
Xanthe Galanodel Medium humanoid (half-elf) fighter 1 / paladin 16, neutral good ------ AC 24 (+1 elvish plate armor, +1 shield, cloak of protection, Defense) HP 130 Prof Bonus +6 Initiative +7 Speed 30 ft ------ STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA 13 20 14 10 12 20 ------ Saves Str* +13, Dex +12, Con* +14, Int +7, Wis* +13, Cha +12 Skills Acrobatics +11, History +6, Intimidation +11, Perception +7, Performance +11, Persuasion +11 Damage Resistances spell damage Condition Immunities diseased, frightened, sleep Senses darkvision 60 ft, passive Perception 17 Languages Common, Draconic, Elvish ------ Fey Ancestry. Longbow. +11 to hit, range 150/600 ft, one target. Hit: 1d8+5 piercing damage. ----- Gear: +1 elvish mithril plate, +1 guardian shield (+2 to initiative), cloak of protection, moonblade (+3 atk/dmg, finesse, beacon, vorpal), longbow, 40 arrows, signet ring, dragonchess set, deck of playing cards, music box, fine clothes, misc adventuring gear, and 574 gp, 70 pp.
ASIs/Feats: 1) +2 Dex 2) Resilience (Wisdom) 3) Inspiring Leader 4) Mounted Combatant
FYI: During her adventures, she found a potion in a dragon's hoard that gave a permanent +2 to Charisma. She also upgraded her mithril plate to magical +1 mithril plate. Also, while fighting a titan, she scored two crits in a row and did enough smite damage to kill him. The DM decided at that point that it was time her moonblade got upgraded and proceeded to randomly roll "00" on the chart, thus granting her sword the most appropriate benefit of becoming a vorpal blade! She then got to use it as such when she later rolled a natural 20 against one of the titan's girallon minions.
EDIT: The DM says I can summon a pegasus with find steed! |
