My experience as a Kobold

I had been playing a Halfling Rogue (assassin) in a campaign for a while. Our characters are all about 5th - 6th level. The DM is very slow handing out XP (I am ok with that)

Any way 2 sessions ago My rogue is killed. That is when I had an Idea!

In our sessions we have had a half starved1 armed Kobold as a reoccurring character. He was somewhat helpful after we saved his family from a goblin hoard.

Long story short I asked if I could play "Larp" (that is his name). Everyone thought it could be fun. Here is how we rolled him.

We took the stats / traits from the monster manual. I picked a class/background and leveled him up to level 5. I kept his level 1 HP as the Kobolds starting HP (maxed out like any player) I think it was 2D6 -2. Then for the levels afterword’s I took the rogues HP rolls. For a background I picked outlander. For Class I went Arcane Trickster, I liked the idea of the mage hand making up for his lost left hand. For one of his cantrips I picked the illusion disguise self spell (sorry cant remember the name) so I can go in to towns and not be killed on sight,

What I found is that sunlight sensitivity is a bear but that pack tactics was awesome. at night my Kobold has advantage on attacks that my ally’s are near by which means lots of bonus damage for a rogue. But the disadvantage in the sun kind of takes all that away. I got so I hated the sun.

in the end it was very fun. The character was pretty underpowered overall but it was fun and very flavorful. The 7 strength was pretty bad but not a huge deal with finesse weapons. With this character I was able to go in to a dragon’s home and talk to the other Kobolds a few times as long as I looked like I was mining with the other Kobolds. Also being small and still 30 speed is pretty nice.

I made his weight 10 (cause he is very small and very thin) and my idea was to be able to carry myself with my mage hand. I have not tried it yet so I don’t know if the DM will allow it. The DM did raise an eyebrow when he saw how light I was and said that is really skinny and short. The DM made him small and thin when we first met him but he did not say how small and thin.

Kobolds are the best period. Being the underdog is what I fell in love with them in the first place. In 3.0/3.5 kobolds had many disadvantages (-4 str, -2 con, small size) and thriving despite that was incredibly fun. Can't wait for a real 5th write up for them.
