I'm going to play a monk soon. I'm starting at 5th level
My real problem is coming up with a good role playing reason on why he's leaving the monastery.
Any ideas past the cliche "I'm going to test my skills I've learned"

Maybe you were part of a travelling troupe of performers and one of them was a female monk who taught you all she knew before being murdered by a shadowy figure you spotted leaving the camp just moments before you were caught in the tent with the dead woman. You are caught over the dead body holding the murder weapon, so you had to flee. Determined to clear your name, or at least get revenge, you search. The only clues you have to go on are in your mentor's diary, which includes further training and other useful information, the weapon used to murder her, and the appearance of the shadowy figure you saw that fateful night: a distinct mask that haunts your dreams.
Go crazy. It's your story to tell. |

This may be a confession of the smallness of his talent, or it may be because you require some change of mind / an experience that the monastery cannot provide. After some length of time or when a critical event occurs, you will be ready to return for more "official" training.

Other ideas include: -A journey of self-discovery is an important part of your training. -A prophecy stated that you would go forth and defeat some terrible evil yet to come. -A rival within the temple framed you and got you expelled. -You failed an important test, and left to avoid the shame. -A high priest disliked you and sent you on a fake mission to get rid of you. -You were chosen by a god, unfortunately, it was a god that neither you nor anyone in your temple had ever heard of, let alone worshiped. Now you have to find a priest of your unexpected patron so they can explain themselves or better yet clear up what is obviously a heavenly bureaucratic error. |
