Hey guys, Playing a 1 shot vs tiamat tonight. Lvl 20 character. And need build idears. Tiamat will be at full strength so immune to most lower level spells and various energy immunities. The party so far has a cleric a rogue and a druid / sorc. So me thinks need some kind of DPs or tank. We are given a bunch of badass magic items as well. Basically our choice of legendary weapon and armor. So vorpal / holy avenger, staff of magi, armor of invulnerability, plate mail of etherealness; etc. So I'm expecting to have equivalents of +3 weapon & armor. Lowest attribute is a 15. So no issues with multiclassing. Basically looking for mix between damage and survivability. Was thinking possibly 1/2 orc barb totem warrior or something, but didn't know if there's be a better combo.

bird monk, fly and stun, or quivering palm.
or a paladin with shield master for defense. smites are good too, though might be tough to land.

Ya I was thinking monk or pally as well. Eventually home girl has to fail her death save vs quivering palm. I don't have the book next to me so don't remember if there's a limit to how many times it can be done. But I think she is immune to stun. Was also thinking fighter pally combo. Maybe eldritch knight for extra spell slots for smiting.

Fighter 11/Barbarian 3/Paladin 6. You get up to seven attacks with advantage, smites, and resistance to almost all damage. She is immune to stun though.

monk 14/pally 6 let's you make all your saves, as well as flurry of smites. go vengence for advantage.

You want at least 10 levels in Paladin to be able to avoid her Frightful Presence.  Either that or just hope that you make the DC 26 Wisdom save at a likely Wis (+1-2) + Cha (5) + Proficiency (6) + I'm assuming Bless (1-4).  Best case scenario you're looking at DC 26 with a +11-16.  That's less or equal to half a chance of making that save.  Either find some magic item to avoid this or take 10 levels of Paladin.

More importantly, you'll obviously want to use the Holy Avenger because she is a Fiend.  Use it as a Longsword + Haste yourself and just laugh.  Laugh for days.

If you truly want godlike DPS, obviously go greatsword + GWF + GWM.  You'll likely only survive for 2-3 rounds, but you'll put out some incredible numbers.

If you want to easily beat her, just go Shield Master + any item that gives you advantage on Dex saves.  The only problem is you're going to have garbage Dex compare to her DC 26, unless you go Dex Paladin.

Oh, and just wait until she's down around 50hp and do a Banishing Smite on her.  Laugh.

Don't take a Vorpal sword.  She has Legendary Actions so the sword's properities wont work.

Fun tactics to piss off your DM:

1.  You only need 2 magical items.  A Bag of Holding and a Portable Hole.

2.  Everyone takes Potions of Invulnerability + Potion of Speed

3.  Go Diviniation Wizard.  Have your party all go Monks with Quivering Palm + Stunning strike.  Force her to use up her legendary resistences.  Then walk up to her, break a Staff of the Magi, and use Portent to make her fail the Dex save.  Poof, 450 nonresisted Force damage.  Same for use with Banishment, etc.

4.  Half-orc + Barb 17 + Fighter Champ (3) + Greataxe of Sharpness (not sure if that's permitted).  Each crit = 81 magical damage.  Combined with someone Hasting you + Commander's Strike + GWM feat, you have a decent shot of taking out half her health in just 1-2 turns.  Likely not allowed though because Greataxes are not Swords.

5.  Sword of Wounding.  You're going to need to shutdown her regeneration somehow and this doesn't permit a save.  Sadly it's only for your damage.

6.  Hazirawn.  Champion Fighter 15/Barb 3 (Bear).  Having someone Haste you.  Laugh as you force so many Con saves to shut down her regen.  Each Crit = 8d6 reroll 1s and 2s.  It's rediculous.

7.  Strap a Talisman of Pure Good to your shield/armor.  Expend charges for force DC 20 Dex saves (she's only +9 so she has a pretty good chance of missing that) to instantly kill her.

8.  She's not immune to Paralyzed.  Why?  No idea.  Have some fun with that information (Wand of Paralysis = Con save so she's only +10 versus DC 20).

9.  Armor of Invulnerability.  I don't know why your DM would allow this, but congrats.  You're immune to her breath weapons.  Feel free to kill her at your leisure as a smiting Paladin.

10.  Bag of Devouring + Bard.  It's a Strength check, so her Legendary Resistence wont help.  Cutting Words to reduce her check by a d12.  If she fails, she "dies".  Admittedly this is cheap, but imagine it like a portal to space with sufficient vacuum to suck her away.

11.  If your DM follows RAW and Jeremy Crawford's tweets, Go Evocation Wizard 18/Fighter 2.  Get a Wand of Magic Missiles.  First round, cast Haste on yourself and run outside of her breath weapon range.  Second round, use your Action to cast Magic Missile as a 9th level spell.  Action surge to cast MM as an 8th level spell.  Use Haste's "Use an Object" free action to dump all the charges as a 7th level spell.  All bolts hit for an average damage of 255 on your turn.  DM will probably ban you after this one.

Well, a question I'd ask yourself is whether or not you want to engage her at all. Do the following:
Win initiative with a caster capable of casting Wish. A Weapon of Warning for advantage, Alert Feat, Diviner Wizard, Bard with +3 to init from proficiency, etc...

Then cast the following:
Wish for Leomund's Tiny Hut as an 8th level spell. She has no way to get into it, no way to break it, and nothing she can do can affect anyone inside it. Even with Truesight, she can't see in it, so anyone attacking from inside the hut has Advantage.

Have 3 Battlemaster Archer Fighter 20s ready to go with Oathbows. They can Action Surge twice per combat, they can use Precision Shot with Sharpshooter even when they roll poorly with Advantage, and assuming she starts close enough to allow melee types to engage, she likely only has 1 round to get away because again, assuming Alert feat, they can likely win initiative.

Heck, assuming things go particularly well, you might not even need the Leomund's Tiny Hut because they could potentially kill Tiamat before she gets to go.

Tiamat is DEADLY and your life esperance is counted in TURNS (not rounds) so you want to kill her VERY quickly.

Get teh druid to cast contagion as a spell level 6 (to bypass the spell resistance) even with legenradayr save she will still be affected for 3 round. Use the rot flesh diseases (vulnerability to all damage).

Then go get a big ass htting weapon (like Hazirawn from the HotDQ) 2d6slashing+2d6neccrotic+2magic+9strenght+0.7(crit bonus)+1.285great weapon master bonus action, take all 20 fighter level (for your 4th attack) get the sorcerer to cast protection from evil on you (so your are immune to frighten effect from fiend, and she got disavantage to attack you) get the cleric to cast bless.

If you go battlemaster you can give the rogue a second sneak attack with commander strike. if you go champion you triple your crit chance (crit with a 18-19-20) so increasing your change for a bonus action attack with great weapon master. Race should be half orc, so if you crit you deal an extra d6 damage, and even if Tiamat manage to bring you down, you are still at 1 HP and will require an additional legendary action to bring down for real.

So now you got 4 attacks, action surge for 8 attacks. If one of those is a critical hit, you get a 9th attack. with rot flesh you deal double damage. With a belt of giant strenght 29 you will get a +9 from strenght.

+6 (profiency) +9 (strenght) +2 (Hazirawn magical bonus) +2(1d4 from bless) = +19 to hit compare to her 25 AC. Meaning 70% hit (5.6 hits). With the lucky feat you can reroll the 2.4 miss (when you roll under 6), so you could get all 8 attacks to hit. you are dealing on average 26.985 damage per hit +1., for a total of 215.88 damage (on average), x2 (vulnerabilities from rot flesh) for 431.76 damage.

Next round she will still be affected by rot flesh (since she need to succeed 3 constitution save to cure herself, and even with legenray save she can only succeed once per round). On this new round you no longer might have 1 use of lucky left, so let's say you hit 6 time (out of 8 attacks, since you got action surge twicce per short rest now) for an average damage on round 2 of 323.82. For a grand total of 755.58 compare to the 645 HP she have (615+30 regeneration). So back up by your team you can kill her in 2 round easy.

Then if you can get some potions, go get a potion of flying and a potion of haste so you can fly and reach her (without consuming a concentration slot (already consume with bless and protection from evil) Haste will give you an additonal attack both round, increase your damage output an addtional 26.985 ->53.97 with rot flesh and 107.94 for the second round.

Make sure the cleric hide FAR AWAY so he doesn't get hit and doesn't loose concentration on bless. Same with the druid who casted contagion in melee range make sure he use his bonus action to shapeshift in something very quick and run the hell out of there and hide somewhere safe using his action to disengage. Earth elemental shape and hide underground would be perfect.

Make sure that the rogue and you are flanking Tiamat so she cannot breath of both of you at the same time (so if you are positioned in front of tiamat, the rogue should be behind Tiamat, the druid run left and the cleric run right, making it impossible for Tiamat to get all 4 of you with a single breath weapon.

The rogue and you (the fighter) could use a scroll to keep 2 more concentration check spell up. The cleric can cast death ward to give you an additional survival ability (no concentration on death ward, so it can be use in combination with bless). The rogue can cast rpotection from evil on itself (using a scroll)

This Tiamat fight is VERY hard, and between the frightful presence that only the cleric and the druid MIGHT be able to succeed (explaining why both the fighter and the rogue should find a way to get protection from evil) divine word, and 5 breath weapon per turn dealing 90 damage on average, you really want to burst her down within the MINIMUM amongst of turn.

The perfect set-up would be if everyone can hide in a rope trick, the druid get out, cast contagion and go hide underground (using earth elemental form) getting out of combat so he no longer have a turn, the rogue and cleric stay hiding in the rope trick and once your fully buffed you go out and solo kill her (so she would only have 1 legendary action)
