Hello!

I've been playing D&D for a while now on beginner lvl.

Yesterday my character died (70 dmg against 21 health (full 51). annoying 5 shadar-kai all got hit and 2 crits :S), so I have to create a new one. Problem is, I have no idea what I should pick.

My previous char was a female dwarf, storm cleric, greatspear weapon. I loved to play her and specially the weapon.

So now my DM wants me to choose something different.

I got some things I want or not want:

- race: I want dwarf or shardmind (but read not so great stuff about the latter)

- class: something not too easy, but not too difficult either. We are nearing the end of the season and I have only 4-5 sessions left. I enjoy 2 handed weapons, doing loads of dmg, but want to be able to take some hits too. Ranged is also an option but then I want to try AOE dmg or caster (haven't had that on a char yet), and since good armour is not a must for me as ranged I want good dmg.

No dwarf beserker (already got one the the group, I rather pick something "new")

- lvl: our group is lvling slowly. I will only be playing lvl 4.

- gear/armour: I will only be able to pick one lvl 2 item, one lvl 3 item and got 100 gold to spend, so I'm not able to buy a lot.

- my ideas: I was thinking maybe a dwarf wizard, warlock or swordmage..?

' Couse of my experience with MMORPG and 2 years of D&D as top of my group I am able to handle some advanced stuff.

The main idea is I get a new char that is not attack, hoping to hit, if not.. done. I want something more active.

Anyone who can help me out?

well... hmmm...

Can I interest you in something of an elementalist monk? take Burning Hands maybe?

I've never been a huge fan of the elementalist monk fluff... or even the monk fluff in general... but the mechanics aren't bad and you can change fluff. I made a character using the monk mechanics that was a scholar who uncovered ancient secrets for binding a demon within his own body and then accessing it's power (explaining claws and wings and tripple jointed legs and breathing fire and such). I never got to play him much, though.

You will always have bonus attack options, you may not have much Ki to power your abilities, but it does reset on a short rest. All simple weapons are monk weapons, so your character can use a spear two-handed and still make bonus action attacks via martial arts (My character grew a spiked tail to explain the attacks).

On the other hand, Paladins are never short on choices, either. Spells, attacks, smites... at level 4, my paladin (Oath of the Ancients, shield master) could go through several combat rounds without duplicating.

wait... are you playing 5th edition? I don't remember GreatSpears

Thank you SterlingRat!

Not sure if I can pick a monk but I'm definitely going to look into that.

We are playing edition 4. It is possible that our DM edited stuff. We are in a beginner group that is mainly focused on easy and not too serious playing. A lot of stuff is simplefied.

edit: Ohhh it is only now that I see I'm in the wrong part of the forum. Whoops!
