So, I have been mulling over a character in my head for some time over a character of mine, but really not sure where to go with it. The basic idea is he is a Forest Gnome Beast Master with a giant badger mount. My DM already said this was okay, that the companion HP is 5x ranger level not 4, that he could wear barding, and that they get death saves. However, I had the idea of having a Folk Hero background, and that it stems from my character being a sort of mounted police officer who patrolled and defended the lands before he went on to do further good in assistance with the trouble in the HotDQ module. I'm entering at level 4 currently, since another character is being replaced.   Problem is, this concept seems to have a lot of different routes, and potentially very feat intensive. I could go Defensive fighting style and use a shield alongside Mounted Combatant to protect my badger while he dishes out decent damage, but then there's no point to him having so much HP. I only get one attack a round too since my badger will do most of the work, so Duelist isn't that great for me. I want to use a light crossbow, but my mount would be in the fray so much that it would really suck to try and do. and was thinking Crossbow Expert might help with that. Mounted Combatant would still be required though, so AoE doesn't 1-shot my companion and main source of damage.   So basically, what do you guys think are some good combinations of feats/fighting styles and what have you that would work for a Small, badger-mounted Ranger?   P.S. My DM won't let me dual wield hand crossbows. I already talked to him about it, and despite all of my reasoning as to how it could work logistically, he does not agree.
