| #1TwistedRemorseMay 18, 2015 17:06:43 | So, hopefully my group will finally be able to pay this Saturday now that our dm's life has settled. I'm trying to make a character that Is different then what I played, oh.. ten years ago or so, which were barbarian, rogue, monk... mostly melee. The idea of a warlock/Cleric seems very enjoyable, I'm not looking for the most powerful character, just something fun. So I was wondering what anyone with some experience in d&d would suggest with this big specifically. I really like the death domain and pact of blade with great old one patron. The raising undead and creating thralls seems fun. But anyway, would appreciate any input, good or bad, on this style of character. Also We are using feats, and I'm leaning towards human, with feats like heavy armor, polearm master, war caster? Thanks guys! |

| (Reply to #2)TwistedRemorse | he basically said to pick anything, within a certain limit. Also most of the group will be on the border of cn or ne which I assume will give them a little bit of freedom. I believe his campaign will involve something that sort of unifies the people in the group that may cut down on in fighting, but I could be mistaken lol |

Reaper and Improved Reaper work on all necro spells, so you can cast with your warlock slots and still get those bonuses. (Keep in mind that the only damaging necromantic cantrip is Chill Touch, which is ranged; you want to avoid it in melee. Unless you homebrew an alternative. IMO it's called Chill Touch, it should me melee-range.) Touch of Death and Divine Strike work in all melee attacks. Only Inescapable Destruction requires you to use cleric spells and care about your Wisdom.
So I'd go cleric as many levels as you need to get what you want (at least to 5 for Animate Dead), and focus on buff spells like Bless, which don't depend on Wisdom. Put the rest in warlock and take your offensive stuff from there. Get a decent Charisma for that. If you end up at warlock 12/cleric 8, you can add your CHA + 1d8 to all melee attacks with invocations, plus any buffs you have, which isn't bad.
(Of course, death clerics get proficiency in all martial weapons, including longbows. You could take one of those and hide behind your undead horde while you snipe away. No Blade Pact, but it's not such a loss. With a longbow, you essentially have a free hand at all times due to the way bows work, so you should be able to cast spells freely, as well.)
Though, really, the Oathbreaker paladin is probably who you're looking for. Specific bonuses related to undead, and CHA-based casting that meshes with warlock. (You'll want to be in melee, though; smites, Aura of Hate, other auras that help your horde.) |
