Any local gaming store that sells card games or tabletop RPG manuals and minis usually hold or host DND groups as well, and would be a good place to start looking. |

Mostly it boils down to engaging with the campaign setting/world, going out and adventuring, and making sure you have an answer when the. DM asks "What do you do?"
