H-hello there! I'm uh, not entirely sure where I should actually put this thread and these questions but I'm going to hazard that this is as good a place as any to start.

Anyhow, the name's Kasa, but ya'll can just call me Queenie and I am a new player.

Well, okay, a prospective new player who is totally at a loss for what to do, and how to start, and how to turn the characters have into characters usable for dnd, and where to go to find people to play with who won't mind the fact that I am... a) a total newbie to the whole DnD thing except for the knowledge I've gained from obsessively reading and reread the first 6 books in the Legend of Drizzt series (chronologically; one time though I think I managed to get through to book 10) and playing Baldur's Gate years ago and b) poor, disabled, and without transportation due to the sudden loss of the family car.

Basically: there's big insurmountable wall in front of me and I am frustrated and unsure how to go about stepping foot into this strange new nerdy world.

I guess I have one thing going for me: I may be new to DnD but I'm not completely blind about roleplaying in its other forms. I've played some of the DnD pc games and multiple other rpg games and have been doing text based roleplay for over 11 years. I even have one or two character that with help I could probably turn into characters for the game. (A homosexual middle aged human wizard with a stick jammed so far up his bum it has no hope of ever seeing the light of day and a scaredy cat harpy-- though I'm sure her species would have to be changed.)

So. Yeah.

Any advice for how I should get started and where I should go?
(For reference I am 21, female, and in the Garland-Mesquite-Rockwall area of the DFW metroplex area of Texas; looking preferably to play with people around my age.)

Find a gaming shop near you and ask if they run Adventurer's League games.  Just show up with a 1st level character on game night.  Read the AL rules for how to make said character, or post in this thread or the AL thread for help.  I have a friend in Plano who says there's a huge gaming shop near him somewhere; don't know how far that is from you.

Mythweavers (http://www.myth-weavers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=141) and Giant in the Playground (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?51-Finding-Players-(Recruitment)) are both home to a fair number of games. You could join one there if you are not too opposed to play-by-post.
