I have never played a character that is primarily one that users magic as a weapon. I typically choose fighters or rogues to play. However, I would like to try my hand at some sort of magic user, and I'm seeking input from you guys. For a first time primarily magic using character what would you recommend? I would like a good balance of powerful spells and ease to play. Thanks in advance

Personally I'd start with a 1/3 caster such as eldritch knight arcane trickster (leaning toward eldritch knight) working your way up going to paladin ranger or even warlock (leaning to paladin personally) then to a full caster that can mix it up halfway maybe call these half fighters such as a bard cleric or druid.

I say go Warlock. Why? You've choices, without being overwhelmed; You've a relatable and reliable backup (Eldritch Blast), and your spell slots are far and above easier to manage than any other class.

Yeah, Warlock is the magic class that's specifically designed to accomodate beginners. That's where I'd go.

Agree on warlock. Fiend patron allows adding some typical spells for more familiarity.
