awww.... Come On!

Spiked Chain

2d4           Finese, heavy, reach, two-handed

Feat: Spiked Chain Master

- gain  proficiency in spiked chain

- when you take the Attack action and attack with only a spiked chain you can use a bonus action to make another melee attack with the spiked chain.

- While you are wielding a spiked chain other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter your reach

No? too OP?

Good riddance to bad rubbish. I'd be perfectly content if I never saw it again in 5e.

Just use stats for a whip and flavour to taste.

I'd prefer stats for a meteor hammer and add it to the Monk weapon list.

Also, a weapon that's both finesse and heavy is nonsensical.

The whip isn't a good solution, because it sucks. Minimal damage die and no modifier. You're better off fighting with a dagger and just throwing it if needed, which gives better range than Reach and more damage to boot.

I hope we never see a spiked chain.  If a finessable two-handed weapon were to become available, then that would eliminate probably the only reason to invest in strength as a fighter.

Second on re-flavor the whip.  Make it 1d6 if you really want to differentiate between the weapon material (rawhide vs metal).

ouch...

silly, rubbush, nonsensical? sure...

but spiked chains are also FUN!

I hope they add one later...

I guess I'll re-skin two whips and take the Dual Wielder feat.

Oh yeah... forget the heavy property! Why shouldn't halflings be able to use spiked chains? Speaking of silly... I'm going to create a halfling traveling caravan of entertainer/acrobats that all use spiked chains that have colorful scarves tied to the ends... Who wants in that campaign?

I certainly wouldn't have a problem changing the damage die of the spiked chain to a regular d8 or even a d6 if it kept the finesse and reach properties...

Some settings have it more integrated (Eberron, I'm looking at you); but calling it a 'whip' solves most the problems.  A whip doesn't do the best damage (obviously), but a finesse fighter focusing on combat-control Maneuvers could do worse than a one-handed reach weapon.

A hypothetical 2d4 spiked chain would go from 5 to 6 average damage exactly with Great Weapon Fighting style and a Greatsword goes from 7 to 8.33.  The bigger the die, the more relative value of the re-rolls.

However, using a finesse weapon in two hands (either with the versatile or two-handed property) would inflate the value of Sneak Attack for rogues substantially.  Each die of Sneak Attack would receive +0.67 damage, or a nearly 20% bonus to Sneak Attack damage.

Additionally, it would crowd out a lot of two-handed Strength builds, as they could now be refactored as Dexterity concepts instead.

I don't think the game needs a finesse weapon that is versatile or two-handed.

GladiusLegis, I'm beginning to think that you don't like the spiked chain.

Nobody with good taste and an even passing concern for balance likes the spiked chain.

I had a player ask to use a spiked chain. After much hemming and hawing, I made this:

Spiked chain               2 sp               1d4 piercing               2 lb.               Finesse, reach, versatile (1d6)

He wasn't very happy, but he used it. I have to admit I'm not exceptionally fond of the 3E spiked chain -- what a mess that was.

My MFA research advisor said the same thing about my taste when I insisted that Post-Painterly Abstraction was the most sublime example of the post-war New York art scene.

Not that long ago, someone was trying to make rules for a Double-Headed Meteor Hammer. You could go look at that thread.

(I didn't like a lot of their suggestions, but that doesn't mean that you won't.)
