Not intending to sound dumb, but what's the big deal about Guidance?

What is the super secret roll that this affects that makes it such a boon?

So if you had this and Bless running on you, you would add 1d4 to every roll except damage. Got it.

Thanks.

They're both Concentration spells, if I remember correctly, so you'd need a couple of casters to do it.

Bless is for Attack Rolls and Saving Throws, Guidance is for Ability Checks. The other important distinction being that Bless is a 1st level spell whilst Guidance is a Cantrip.

If you have to do a non-time critical ability check, then guidance gives you a bonus d4 for essentially no cost (since it's a cantrip).  I think that's a big deal myself.

The trick is finding a reason to cast Guidence within a minute of what you're doing. I doubt a character will be casting a spell on themself every minute just in case they might need it. If you're getting jumped by an ambush, there is no reason to have Guidence cast.

A lot of the time you can get a better effect by just using the Aim action. Spend an action to give an ally an advantage on a roll. Saves a spell slot. Guidence is good when it comes up, I just don't think it's as awesome as some people think it is.

suspect that a lot of the strength of Guidance will come from DMs who allow Clerics to just sort of assume that they run "perma-guidance". There is, after all, nothing to stop you recasting the spell every minute.

When I play with my druid, I wish I could bring my parrot with me and put him on my shoulder, "Guidance, guidance, guidance." Basically, I address the DM as, Guidance.

I derno if bards can get it later, but I know a lot of bards that are upset that they don't have access to Guidance, saying that the bard was really nerfed buffing-wise (I have no clue if they are). They all might multiclass, just for Guidance.

I myself think Guidance maybe should be errated. I derno how though. The dm could control for it, but that would be a pain. But it does seem like the Guidance is the 5ed craze!

Lets all say it together, "Guidance!"

As a Warlock, if I feel like we are about to have an Initiative situation, I throw Hex out on the biggest, baddest looking guy in the bunch and give him disadvantage on Dexterity checks.  Watch his Initiative tank as he rolls a 20 and a 3.  LoL  Also, I get more damage on him during the combat.  -nods-

Bahamut (unable to sleep, tossing and turning in bed, eyes bloodshot):  If that Cleric prays for Guidance ONE MORE TIME

Cleric (walking down a dirt road with his party):  Bahamut give me Guidance!

Bahamut:  ARGHHHHHHHH!

Cleric (spontaneously combusts in blinding burst of fire taking out his entire party):  Eeeek!

Bahamut:  I really need to make that prayer more complicated.  (Goes to sleep)

Asking for Divine Guidance from your very Lawful God as a required ritual of your faith, with all the baggage that entails, is actually neat conceptually and not far off from some more cloistered religious groups historically.

Even if the cleric is also stomping around in the heavy armour, chanting and waving every minute probably tanks the group's stealth capabilities if nothing else.

I suppose if a Cleric (or other character) casts guidance every minute, a DM could make everything the Cleric does outside of combat take 10% longer.  The cleric's overland move speed is 9% slower, etc. etc.

Not to mention the fact that spellcasting might be seen as inappropriate in a settlement or may alert creatures with good hearing or special magic sensitivity in hostile areas.

I doubt it'd be an issue though, because I don't personally know many players that would lobby for permanent guidance.   I see it more like this:

Somebody wants to perform a skill check.

Another guy helps him for advantange.

The cleric is essentially a "third man" that adds 1d4 in addition to the advantage by casting guidance at that time.

I assume overland movement normally includes using your action for additional movement, otherwise it wouldn't slow down when you use stealth, forage, or track.

Consequently, those would be additional activities rendered slower by casting guidance repeatedly, although they may benefit from the spell's effect.
