I want to make an Ocean God worshiping cleric, so that puts me squarely into taking the Tempest domain which fits, but not as well as I'd like.

If you could alter the Tempest domain to focus more on water, how would you do it?

Also, does anyone else find it odd that the domain dealing with the sea and lightning gets the heavy armor proficiency at first level?

I think Druid with Circle of the Land (Coast) and Acolyte background fits better flavorwise.

Except I'd rather play a cleric, hate shape shifting, and want to be a cleric of the sea, not the coast. It doesn't fit my background either.

It may not give minuses to swimming (unless it's noted in the DMG), but any dm worth his salt should know that swimming in practically any kind of metal armor is going to be nigh impossible.

Still, I'll probably wear scale mail (thematic) unless I'm aboard a ship.

How about these 'alterations' if you are near a large enough body of water?

Change the lightning/thunder damage for the following to damage with/from water instead (while still using the same damage totals for each):

  • Wrath of the Storm
  • Channel Divinity: Destructive Wrath
  • Thunderbolt Strike

If you were looking for yet one more possible alternative, you could shift the Stormborn 'Flying Speed' to a 'Water Walking (Speed)' ability?

Not sure if these suggestions have any appeal or not, but they are what came to mind when I read your question.

You get Heavy armor either as a balance issue, or so you can be more like Thor.

That's kinda what came to mind as I read it :-x
