I know I know, it's super early to be thinking of a build for OOTA. However, my friend that I play league with has been dying to play a paladin and this news made him excited as a child about finally playing one. So, I know I could play a cleric to compliment him, but I was thinking of something else that would be fun, helpful vs demons, and probably not a cleric this time. I was thinking of an ABJ wizard this time around and focusing on acid type spells for offense (when needed) and buffing, debuffing for the party. So my questions are..

1. Would this be a viable help to his paladin?

2. Are there enough Acid type spells to be a viable threat to a demon type creature at higher levels? Or other offensive spells that aren't either outright resisted or immune by most demons and would be effective?

3. Besides spells like Haste and Hold Monster, what would be a really useful combo with a paladin?

4. Do you have a better class idea in mind if the wizard wouldn't pair up well?

As a clarification, we would be playing with at least two other people (probably more like 3 other people), but we would have no idea what classes would be represented as they change from week to week in the roll call. Thanks for any thoughts you can provide.

Sincerely,

Mark

Do you know which oath he intends to pursue? If you're not set on wizard, playing a paladin of another oath could be pretty fun, complimentary, and provide a wealth of roleplaying opportunities.

I really don't know wizard as a class very well, but I think there are only a handful of acid attack spells -- Acid Splash, Melf's Acid Arrow, and Cloudkill. I think the Elemental Evil player's guide added Vitriolic Sphere or something like that?

A valor bard might also compliment a paladin well in my opinion. Bards are still natural buffers and though they don't get any acid spells, they get a number of enchantment attacks that I think would work on demons without too much trouble. Plus you get a heal now and then to trade off with the paladin in poor circumstances.

He plans on the vengeance oath. Wants to be a two hander style paladin.

LoL that's a funny mental picture. What would a debuffing Valor Bard build look like? Is the mechanism based mostly off of bane?

on a vengeance paladin? wizard can do great using haste (an extra attack, +2AC (to replace the missin shield) etc...) is pretty much the best support spell for a two hander character, and abjurer to give the paladin some extra layer of HP (that stack on temp HP)

Acid spell wise:
Acid splash as a cantrip can be VERY powerfull
Chromatic orb level 1 do nto scale very well

Melf Acid arrow do not scale well neither (compare to scorching ray, but scorching ray will require you to take elemental adept since all demon are resistant to fire (except fo rthe Balor who is immune)
Vitriolique Sphere could be interesting, but it's a season 2 spell, so if you want to use it, you'll be restricted to season 2 things (if you play AL) Even for AL player, if you are friend with the DM you could still make a season 3 character, then run a module from season 2 and find a scroll of vitiolic sphere, or find a season 2 wizard friend and compy the spell in your book. Wizard is the class able to break the season restriction in the easiest way, by simply sharing his spellbook with other wizard from other seasons.

Then what new spell season 3 will bring we have no clue up to now.

Personally I'm making a shadow monk, the underdark should be in perpatual darkness, making the shadow monk perma invisible, able to teleport all the time as a bonus action, I might dip 2 warlock level for devil sight and be able to see true magical darkness.

Or you could just tell Emmanuel that only little girls play Paladins...
