i like the sound of this one. I'd like to DM it one day.

What levels can I expect the PCs to advance to by the end?

Does anybody know how it's structured? I mean, is it adaptable for different amounts of characters?

I'm currently playing through with 7 player characters. I'm thinking it must be adaptable to different amounts of characters because it isn't the norm to have so many at a table.

It's the underdark so the more characters the merrier. However, there are also a ton of NPCs at the start, which might join the party. I think around ten of them. I'd say you can run this adventure with as many or as few PCs as you like. Also, it says up to level 15, but we are planning to go all the way to 20 by just increasing XP awards slightly.

Is there a recommended party size in the book?

No, there is not. I believe 4-5 is default size for 5e D&D. The DMG and DM Basic Rules have info on increasing or decreasing difficulty of encounters based on party size.

One final question: I'm an inexperienced DM (but I've played a lot), and my players will be inexperienced as well.

Is this a good way to start new players, or should I run them through something else first?

Start the group with something else - LMNOP (sorry: Lost Mine Of Phandelver) should be good - since Abyss begins with the PCs in a tough spot: captured and all equipment stolen away.

Without giving away too much:

- It is important to have a Paladin or Cleric who can Remove Curse and/or Greater/Lesser Restoration.  Everybody should have WISmod > 0.  One often-referenced rules section is titled "Madness".

- The temptation will be to create a group of Monks and Barbarians, in order to climb the first hurdle.  You in fact need a more-balanced group.  Later on, Wizards are very useful.

- Encourage questions and descriptions.  The style of the book is not a stat-heavy exercise in number-crunching.  There is always some way to imaginitively solve a given problem.  The player who wants to swing off the chandeliers will be at an advantage over the player whose Plan A is always, "I walk over and swing my sword at it."
