Hey guys,

we will start a new campaign, chars starts at lvl 8 and i want to play something unusal.

First: We will be the bad guys, so i will be a evil paladin. But i want to mix him with a sorcerer (i think with the cha-bonus it fits very well).

So have you any hints for a pal/sor build lvl 8?

Thanks!

Paladin 6/Sorcerer 3/Warlock 3/Sorcerer 8 with Polearm Master feat gives you:

  • Full plate and shield proficiency, allowing you to sacrifice Dexterity.
  • Charisma bonus to all your saving throws.
  • Strength-based melee attack will have to get you through level 10, because at level 11 you get three eldritch blasts.
  • A cantrip spell attack that shoots (eventually) four attacks that adds your Charisma bonus and also hex for more damage per hit at range.
  • Melee smiting with your reaction/opportunity attack when someone gets within 10 feet of you.
  • Access to 7th level spell slots and 6th level Sorcerer spells.
  • Quicken and twinned metamagic for more actions per turn. (more Eldritch Blasts)
  • Regains two second level spell slots on a short rest for more sorcery points or smiting.

I'll pretty much second what FrogReaver said - They may have the same casting stat, but they play much differently.

If it were me, I would start Paladin and stay Paladin to 9 (3rd level spells) or 11 (Improved Smite) before starting levels of Sorceror, and I would be much more likely to pick Warlock or Bard over Sorceror if I wanted to pick up a full caster class.

This is written with the idea of balancing the two classes (4 and 4) (you could shift this 1 level in either direction for a good advantage IE extra attack, or 3rd level spells known)

Okay so lets begin the break down

step one choosing whose on first

If you are going to multi class you need to keep in mind the proficiency bonuses the classes give you and the skills as well.

I would advise choosing the starting class as paladin

reason: first you get wisdom, and charisma as saving throws, second you get proficiency with all armor and shields, plus simple and martial weapons, you get two useful skills and you remove the need for a minimum strength.

For the race I would advise playing a half-elf

reason: +2 to charisma your main casting staff, then we can put +1 into con, and either dex or str depending on the path you choose to take. The two extra skills you gain can also be very useful.

You could also spend a feat to get some warlock powers, IE two cantrips (eldritch blast for a ranged two attacks at 1d10) and pick up HEX being an evil paladin being able to get some necrotic damage in can be nice also boosts damage once per day but can last up to 1hr.

You could also take spell sniper: pick up eldritch blast or another ranged spell cantrip to round your character out, this would give you great range and accuracy)

You will have 3rd level spell slots but not third level spells, you can burn spells to either cast or to smite which is neat.

Okay so lets talk path choices I would advise a vengeance paladin, and dragon sorc.

Dragon sorc gets a little more HP which can be helpful and +3 armor for free. While you can't combo this with armor you can make use of the shield the paladin is proficient in.

You may wish to invest in the war caster feat. As for the other feat or ability boost that would depend on your initial stats and if you feel you will need more of something.

I will post up some rolls I got recently for another game: (I can't roll dice at work) 16, 15, 15, 12, 10, 8

I would place my +2 in either cha or dex depending on if I was focused on being more of a caster or warrior primary, You could also

With this I would probably build a character like so

Half elf (feel free to swap int and str bsaed on your needs, or character concept)

STR:10 DEX:16 CON:16 INT:8 WIS:12 CHA: 18

With this build (which may be better or worse then what you have)

I would have an ac of 18 (shield 2, dragon 3, dex 3) 19 if I invested in DEX

I would wield a rapier as my weapon (1d8+dex damage) DEX to hit.

HP: 10+7+(3d6=(12)+3)+(3d10=(18))+24 (taking the guarunteed) 74 HP

I would need some time to think over spells, but I would advise shield for if you get into combat, and focus more on buff and defensive spells, with a few AOE control spells like flaming sphere (which can be used to fight as a bonus action once summoned, and then you can keep fighting in melee)

I will try and post some advised spells later.

Hope this helps

Also for backgrounds: if you want the arcana skill take sage, if you want to focus more on your combat side consider soldier, you could also take really any background that interests you and has skills you would like.
