Paladin or Runepriest in 4e?

Hey guys, my DM wants me to make a dragonborn paladin but I really want to play a wise cleric, not a smiting champion with no brain. Would Runepriest (or a hybrid) be a good compromise? At the moment I am having terrible trouble making a Paladin capable of succeeding any kind of ability check they can get training for.  Anyone have any better choices for someone who wants to bash things, heal, and not completely fail an int or wisdom based check? I realise there is also cleric but my DM is set on something like a paladin.

Final stats for build so far:

Str: 8 Con: 13 Dex: 8 Int: 13 Wiz: 16 Cha: 18

I'm planning on using my first two extra level-up points to bring up Con and Int. I tried looking at the Runepriest optimisation guide but it seems to be broken beyond readability, so any help would be really apreciated!

Wrong forum.  The 4e forum is further below.

But

Runepriest is better for bash and heal the paladin.  And they should go 18 Str 16Wis, and whatever else.

There's no good bash and heal for Wis and Int.  Though you could possibly make a cleric work.  They can do some bashing with Wis.

Either way, you basicly always want to put your level-up points into your main stats (Str , Wis).  That's just the way 4e math works out.

Though Con is not as importaint as other editions.

Tell your DM that it's your bloody character not his.

Unfortunatly, the Runepriest doesn't get that many usable feats and a lot of the ones that they do are sabotaged by you needing at least four of the others to make them work as most give bonuses that are dependent on the number you have. Having said that, there are a few winners, but most you get too late for them to actually be useful. Resist 5 radiant and necrotic would be cool if you could get it in Heroic, but it isn't so hot by the time you can take it in Paragon and it doesn't scale after that, but stuff like allowing someone else to shift a number of squares equal to the number of rune feats you had would be helpful - if you had at least a couple. But, again, that's a paragon feat. Fortunatly, dragonborn get awsome feats so there is that.
