This is the build.

2 Paladin 18 Rogue (Arcane Trickster)

Its up to you what Class you want to take at first level, Pally for a bit more HP, Rogue for more roguish type skills.  The idea is that end game you have 9d6 Sneak with pleanty of spell slots to sack for smites.  Now you come out of hiding and stick a baddy with your rapier, hit, and do 1d8+5 dex (and any magic) plus 9d6 sneak and 5d8 Radiant Smite,  Think of the crts... shiver.

Is this class playable while you get to high levels?

Is this build too much of a one trick poney?

It's probably somewhat better than a straight Rogue (AT) 20. Can't help but think that some sort of Assassin/Paladin of Vengeance MC would be better in a similar capacity, though.

Also, you pretty much always want to start as a Rogue if you're going to be an MC of that class.

The only problem with starting rogue is then you need a 13 str to multi class. Starting pally let's you dumb stat str. As for assassin you don't get spell levels so they don't help for smiting

Actually, no, you need to meet the prerequisites for BOTH classes to multiclass, so you'd need a 13 STR (and 13 CHA) anyway.

As for Assassin, 3 levels of that would get you Assassinate. Slap that on 17 Paladin levels (preferably Vengeance) and you'll still get more 4th-level smites per day than the AT build can get. And actually guarantee a crit on those. And get two attacks/round, with stuff like the Dueling style bonus and Improved Divine Smite on each attack. All you'd really lose is a feat/ASI, but if you go Variant Human you'll at least get 1 feat out of the deal.

Best burst build (IMO).

Assassins 3 (sneak attack, auto-crits) / paladin 5 (smite, dex, multi-attack) / battlemaster 3 (TWF style, action surge, battlemaster dice).   Halfling for Dex and rerolls.

((1d6 raiper +2d8 smite) * 5 attacks + 4d8 battlemaster dice + 2d6 sneak attack) * 2 crits + 5*4 dex.

= 200 damage (assuming everything hits, you have advantage and lucky).

CL 8.

All really nice concepts but just a few clarifications:

1. Rapier is d8 not d6

2. For all builds only 1 bonus attack each round (ie TWF won't stack with shield feat - you'll have to choose either shove or offhand, nor will you get another with extra attack)

3. Only 1 sneak attack per round (You'll have to decide which single attack to add it to)

4. For 5d8 smite you need lvl 4 spell (2d8 1st lvl then 1d8 for each additional level to max 5d8) TA lvl 17 only has 3 x lvl 3 slots)

5. Duelist gives +2 to damage rolls (there could be debate on how many dice constitute a "roll") if every dice gets a +2 it gets mad damage, but if dam+crits+sneak+maneuver all cont as single roll then a bonus attack will beat it hands down.

The 17/3 dexadin/assassin with TWF is looking at 3 advantage rolls for auto crits ranging from 46 to 360 dam, over the trix TWF doing less attacks but higher sneak but with no auto crits (19 to 134, with 76.5 average). Croats double that but is 1/20 chance.

I don't have books with me but by TWF I mean 2 weapons with that feat that let's u ignore 'light' requirement.

Also *crits (not Croats')

Oh I also forgot about action surge so for dexadin that's 5 opening advantage autocrit attacks as previous poster indicated (once every short rest, but only 3 with the max smite). This makes for a devastating opening. With half-Orc  gaining extra 5d8 for that opening, it probably outweighs halflings lucky feature.
