Hey all,

I am going to be playing in a game (3rd level) and I want to play something that is benefical and helpful.  This is my first time playing 5th edition FYI.

The party make up is as follows:

Human Paladin - Oath of Vengence

Human Fighter - Battle Master

Wood Elf Ranger/Rogue

Wood Elf Druid - Caster

Halfling Wizard - Evocation

I was kicking around a Valor Bard, a Cleric (Knowledge or Trickery, both for RP/Flavor) or a Monk but can't really commit to anything.  If you can please suggest something that can work well that would be great other than the normal "play what makes you happy" that would be awesome.  Not entirely sure what will work well with the above party.

Giants are going to be an enemy throughout the campaign.

Thanks in advance!

Sorcerer. Can do damage, but also can stick a twinned Haste on the unsophisticated weapon-swingers once you hit 3rd level. Favored Soul (Life Domain) also adds healing support when needed.

I find it weird that you are thinking Knowledge Cleric but not Lore Bard, that would be the best skill monkey aka beneficial and helpful.

Assuming the battle master is melee, everything is well covered including pally/druid healing. I would rather pick a second Cha character than a third Wis one and go Lore Bard.

- Will the pally be the face of the party?

- Does the party need another Stealth member?

I think it all depends on how you want to play and roleplay it.

- Maybe you don't have a concept yet and will let it grow organically?

Be something with Darkvision, like a Tiefling or Half-Elf. They both have decent stats for charisma casters too.

Knowledge Bard with College of Lore can use Cutting Words to protect party members with reactions. It is a very party friendly class with access to a great spell Paladins get at level 9: Aura of Vitality.

A Bard can learn it at level 6.

Song of Rest will also help everyone in the party after a tough fight.

You can take some levels of Oath of Ancients Paladin for medium armor and extra attack, and a spell resistance aura. All your extra Bard Spell slots can be dumped into divine smite damage if you need a damage spike.

If I wasn't already a Half-Orc Paladin in my game, I would consider a Tiefling Bard playing a guitar, with Castanets on her tail. Half-elves are undoubtably the master race when you want charisma, but a Dragonborn or Tiefling would be a little more unique, or strange, and strange is interesting. Dragonborn are kind of trash tier in this edition though. Being able to breathe fire without breaking invisibility is about all they have.

Sorcerer or Lore Bard get my vote. People generally hear Bard and scoff. Lore Bards can hand pick spells they want. No other class gets that versatility. Their usual spell list is nothing to sneeze at, as many of their spells render an enemy useless. Sorcerers, on the other hand, just... Nobody can Lightning Bolt like a Sorcerer.

Lore Bard all the way. Party has plenty of damage with the fighter, paladin, ranger/rogue and evocation wizard. You'll need more support and a party face.

Edit: Actually, if Favored Soul is allowed in your campaign I would change my vote to that aswell. Otherwise I would stick Bard.

Just for a bit of fun, Halfling Barbarian to take on those giants!
