Hi Folks - im converting my Pathfinder campaign over to 5e and so far no problems with pretty much everything. However i have one last character to convert and thats Witch from the Pathfinder rules.

Before i start the work to do this has anybody already done anything with this ? e.g. a whole class, a background etc ?

I am interested in seeing where this goes, as I like the Pathfinder Witch class.

From a cursory look through the PHB, the Warlock Tome Pact seems the closest to a Witch Class.

For a fast and dirty approach, Witch = Warlock

You and your player should be able to work with that.

(If I was converting a witch ( with a familiar)  to a warlock who did not have one, then I could make the familiar be invisible/ dream spirit animal, that detect magic does not detect. Make the emperors new clothes familiar be a DMs proxy, providing useless intel or being quarrelsome until the warlock has the Find Familiar spell and calls a real one, which will act as a proper familiar and be allied with the warlock/witch)

Possible Patrons being: (but are not limited to)

Fey- A Hag, Lady Moonlight, Queen of Air and Darkness

Fiend- A Succbus, Lillith, Asmodeus

Great Old One-

Apocolothoth The Moon-God mysterious Lunar entity dwelling in the dimension of Enno-Lunn.

I think a chain warlock would be more fitting.  You get a nice familar that way.

Thanks for the advice folks. I shall play around with the character and see how it converts over.

Would be nice to see what you come up with.

 :-)

Blade Pact is more spellsword and can create Warlock Knights and Jedi.

Chain Pact is interesting and pretty powerful early on, Chains of Carceri Invocation looks pretty tasty: Hold Monster 1 per day (Celestial/Fiend or Elemental only) You get the Find Familiar spell, which can only be performed as a ritual. You can always recast it and have your imp become a sprite or a pseudodragon, an octupus or a fish plus more. Your familiar can perform an attack instead of one of your own attacks.

Tome Pact:3 Cantrips from anywhere (a Shillelagh for a magic weapon perhaps or some divinatory Guidance or even Spare the Dying or Shocking Grasp, Book of Ancient Secrets Invocation (2 ist level rituals (possibly Find Familiar, but the facility to copy any other ritual). You could even save yourself a couple of Invocations with rituals such as Speak with Animals and Comprehend Languages ( Beast Speech and Eyes of the Rune Keeper). If your book of shadows wielding Witch can get hold of the3rd level  ritual for Leomund's Tny Hut, then you always have a place to stay for a long rest.

IMHO the Tome Pact is more like a Witch, a Warlock is more chain pact, but it is upto you and the player.

There is a sweet forum thread on 101 Warlock Patrons.

EK also works for creating Jedi - they can even summon their "light saber" to their hand using weapon bond as a bonus action.
