| #1MatyrMar 05, 2015 19:39:14 | So I keep DMing and not playing in Adventurer's League and I have about 11k exp to give out to my characters. Unfortunately I've just been using pregens to fill tables if need be.
I played my first game as a player with the pregen dex fighter and the group decided that it would be funny if my hillbilly good-ole boy character got a headband of intellect. Now that I have a magic item I felt like I should probably make him a real character. Also, I have no idea how to set this guy up for picking an archetype, or really what sort of build options there are. This is my first go at building a guy in 5e, so yell if something looks wrong / illegal for AL.

Eldritch Knight is not bad, but I'd be leery of losing access to that headband for whatever reason and suddenly being inept at my signature fighting style. Battlemaster is also good, combines flavorfully with high INT, and works fine without the headband. |
| #3supreme_slayerMar 05, 2015 21:44:27 | Because you have 9 Strength, it looks like you might have taken the variant human but given yourself all of the stat bumps from being a normal human? Or maybe you rolled for stats. |
| #4Coredump00Mar 05, 2015 23:40:28 | He is fine. He took 15 15 12 12 9 8 Bumped the 15's to 16's; and used the headband to turn the 8 into a 19
OTOH, I have no idea how you managed to get 11K in reward XP unless you were running Encounters and Expeditions every week. (BUt hey, if you did, more power to you.) |

| #8Mommy_was_an_OrcMar 06, 2015 13:45:46 | I like to start off such a build with Rogue 1/Fighter 5 that eventually goes to Assassin 3/Battlemaster 11. It gets you Expertise and a couple of extra skills as well as some damage if you can get Advantage. Precision Shot means you don't miss those Sharpshooter attacks that often and Rogue 3 adds to that. |
| #9MatyrMar 06, 2015 15:41:21 | Well I'm already a level 2 fighter. So as long as you dont have to start rogue to go down that route, I'll take a look at it. |

| #12MatyrMar 07, 2015 5:28:37 | Well, I appreciate feedback, but "Be a Ranger/Rogue" is not very helpful when it comes to answering the question "What do I do with my bow fighter now that he has 19 int". I would like to remain a bow fighter. I might go rogue for a level or so and then take levels in fighter afterwards, but that delays doing much in fighter for a while. Also does one just ignore the 19 int and go Battlemaster instead of trying for something like the spellcasting versions of the fighter or rogue? |

With the 19 INT (through an item), I'd say you can not multiclass into a Wizard or anything with an actual INT requirement (not that you were even considering, IJS).
I think of the Champion as your typical dumb jock. So he's out.
The 19 INT obviously benefits an Eldritch Knight most if you're sticking with the Fighter class. The other class it helps a lot is the Thief class (Arcane Trickster, most of all). I can see a Battlemaster with a high INT too.
Do what you want with him. You certainly won't suffer for having a high score in what was previously a dump stat! |

| #17FrogReaverMar 07, 2015 11:47:27 | Having a high int does open up a few eldritch knight spells that get overlooked. So eldritch knight could be very good with that, I'm just not sure what options the higher int actually opens up for them.
In normal play without such a high int the battlemaster variant is a bit more optimized. Int really doesn't benefit him. However, a single level of rogue multiclass can put that int to good use by easily making you have the best investigate skill in your group. Also a ranged fighter with some rogue levels for sneak attack does tremendously well.... |
| #18FunkySpunkApr 03, 2015 21:08:20 | What did you end up doing?
I'm curious about this headband!
It sounds really fun, from an RP standpoint. Just make sure you occasionally take it off, or maybe it slips off, from time to time. Or, if you make a boneheaded mistake: "oh man, my headband must be loose" ::re-adjusts:: |
| #19NevvurApr 05, 2015 20:37:59 | I'd stick with your original concept, have some fun roleplay with your hillbilly turned genius for awhile, and trade the headband later on when the opportunity presents itself. |
