| #1BRJNSep 22, 2014 17:23:40 | Looking back on my previous D&D characters, I noticed that I have always played back-line or ranged combat specialists. For variety, I want to create a 5e melee character. What class will best allow me to:
- be well-rounded and easy to fit into random groups. Think LFR modules at a convention. - multiple medium-size attacks > one big Haymaker blow. Like a Monk, I want several chances to get a hit, figuring one-of-three is still better than a complete miss. - good enough armor to deflect most attack rolls against me. Getting taken down on Round One is no fun. - high HP. Just in case. - teamwork-friendly features. Such as MBA + Warlord.
My initial thought was to try to convert a 4e halfling tempest fighter into 5e. Is this a good choice? Are there better ones?
Thanks to all.

You can equip two shortswords without trouble and go to dex and con (both gets bonus from being a stout halfling). Take two-weapon fighting as your fighting style and use your maneuvers to support your party on the way. There are some warlord-based ones there as well. This build goes more for reliablility than pure damage output+healing features (in that case, a paladin would be better). |

Think LFR modules at a convention. every team need someone able to take some punishement and dish out massive damage - multiple medium-size attacks > one big Haymaker blow. Like a Monk, I want several chances to get a hit, figuring one-of-three is still better than a complete miss. how about multiple huge size attack? at levl 5 you get 2 attack, take great weapon fighting and you now have 3 attack if you crit or if you kill a ennemy (you will often be able to kill minions (goblin/kobold) in a single swing. and you can get advantage whenever you want - good enough armor to deflect most attack rolls against me. Getting taken down on Round One is no fun. build with AL rule you can easyly get 15 AC (10+dex(2)+con(3)) which is a decent number - high HP. Just in case. You got the highest HP in the game plus resistance to bludgening, percing and slashing damage plus the option to go bear totem to gain resistance to everything except psychic - teamwork-friendly features. Such as MBA + Warlord. wolf totem will give advantage to all your melee friends, sentinel will keep the ennemy near you protecting the mages and giving you a 4rth attack, polearm master will give you a additional attack even if you don't kill a ennemy and more sentinel procs
for magical item wise yes they are rare, wounderfull item and not garantee, this is why this build work without them, but if you have a chance to get something try to aim for. but since item are shared in a group and goes to the one with the least magical item, you want to avoid taking item that won't be of much use to you.You will also have a low Charisma so you will be able to be attuned to only 1 item.
you want an amulet of health, since you will bring your strenght to 20, but you will probably take feat instead of boosting Consitution. more constitution will improved your AC and you HP pool. at least untill youcan find a belt of giant strenght allowing you to beat the 20 cap on strenght magical reach heavy weapon (halbert, glaive) if you intent to go polearm master. otherwise greatsword is the best weapon around. ring of protection (one can be found in the starter set) and that is it, you don't need armor, since some of your ability depend on your being naked. |
