Playing at level 20

I am curious....  how many of you get to level 20 on a regular basis?  How long do you continue to play such characters?

I realize 5E is new, but even in 4E and before....

I ask because a lot of the build help puts a lot of emphasis on how good the build will be at levels 18-20.  I see builds that are deemed 'better' that rely on all 20 levels to *be* the better option.

Based on my experience, it seems a waste to care about level 20..... the *vast* majority of my characters never get close to that far.  So I was wondering if others got there on a regular basis, and if you did... how long did you continue to use those characters?

A lot of people like the statistical analysis and number crunching that goes into it. It's theorycrafting, and not particularly meant to be all that practically playable.

You mean like paladin 6 /monk 14 who has Stat+11 to all saves?

Yea, that's not something you should really plan for.

I agree: In my experience, you should really optimize for second and third tier. I look for builds that are going to get cool stuff and be fun to play consistently across that range of levels.

In my experience, the game gets boring once you can Teleport and Raise Dead, so level 9 is about the effective cap.

It would be nice for the game to work at every level, including a defacto end game level, arbitrarily decided to be "20".

20 has more going on, and more importantly, more crazy going on ... than level 1.

But that's just me.  Some people like early game only.  Ok whatev's.

Separately, there's no reason a game has to start at 1, instead of any other level.

There's no reason a game has to stagnate as level X, instead of any other level.

There's no reason a game can't be "best" for a homegame, at whatever level it happens at.
