So I wanted to think of a 'build' that is really strong at early levels, without concern of what happens in mid/late levels.
My first inclination was something around a Moon Druid. But didn't know what else might be feasible. (But not a paladin)
Ideas? |

Wood Elf Rogues do the most damage before level 5. Though they can be squishy.
Overall i would say alt-human fighter, heavy armor mastery, archery style, heavy crossbow, and two short swords for backup. At level 4, pick up crossbow expertise at level 4, and switch to handbow+shield. Only use a shortsword if slashing damage matters. Boost Dex at level 6, if you make it that far. |

anyway, at level 3 thats giving you either +6 or +8 to attack (insanely high for such low levels) and (assuming 16 Dex) you'll be doing 2d8+3+1d6 due to hunters mark and colossus slayer. at 5th level it's 3d8+6+2d6. not too shabby. In the long run fighter archer ends up being better, but if youre stopping at 6 ranger is the way to go.
likewise, Blastlock with agonizing blast/hex combo is pretty high dmg as well. 1d10+3+1d6 at 2 and then 2d10+6+2d6 at 5 |

And if I really feel like it, I can even disarm a trap or two. |
| #5SorxoresSep 25, 2014 12:19:08 | barbarian human with great weapon fighting with a greatsword.
2d6+3+2(rage) damage do on average 10 (12) damage, killing in one hit goblin (7hp) Kobold (9hp) etc... so great weapon master will give you a second attack fairly regularly. Rage will give you resistance making your 15 Hp become 30 Hp at level 1.
Fighter with great weapon fighting style and master feat will do 11 damage |
| #6Markus.lSep 25, 2014 12:37:31 | Druid of the moon 2/ Barb1
Super tanky grizzley (brown bear) form + Rage = +2 damage per attack & 1/2 damage from all incoming psyiscal attacks! And you can do it twice per long rest! |

Assuming you take +2 Dex at level 4, by level 5 you'll be opening combat with a +7 Advantage shot doing 6d6+4 damage against anyone who hasn't acted yet, which will be pretty much anyone you want. |

| #11PetardoMauritiSep 26, 2014 16:17:42 | If you keep starting at lvl1, cleric may be the best choice. Not the strongest, but having a choice with quite different paths already from level 1 with useful spells and proficiencies is the most varied choice. |
| #12awogamanSep 27, 2014 22:23:58 | Not to pee on anyone's parade but you wouldn't be able to get the bear form until 8th level because it's challenge ration 1. You could get black bear at 4th level and wolf at 2nd level appear to prolly be the best choices. |
