So, in the new edition, no equivalent to the Prestige Classes, or Paragon paths etc? I've already seen people posting 'Look at my homebrew whatever it is.' Seems like there's a strong desire from players to customize in this way. or did I miss something.

The archetypes/subclasses are the 5e analog of the 4e paragon path or 3e prestige class.  Not a perfect analog, mind you.

Between subclasses, feats, and multiclassing, the functionality of prestige classes is pretty much covered well and good in 5e.

Introducing PrCs would just complicate things needlessly at this point, IMO. Better to make new subclasses and feats, and possibly come up with alternative class features as well.

Homebrew classes have always been a part of the game. I remember there being a massive amount of homebrew classes/character kits back in 2e (which 5th reminds me of) and I used to love reading them. Then 3e came out and the amount of prestige classes was something else I used to love checking out.

Playing with themes and paragon paths is the saving grace of 4e to me. You can cram a lot of character flavor into those, and not worry about whether they "break" the character. You already have a functional character in your base class, but here's a bag of goodies! Feats/ASI and archetypes in 5e don't have the same feel to me. Especially feats; I'd like to take some flavorful options without feeling like a masochist for giving up such hefty bonuses as +2 STR or Great Weapon Master. Multiclassing gives you that agonizing feature delay, and permanently takes your high-level features off the table. I'd love some choice at lvl10 or whatever that gave you more tracking abilities, helped you fight dragons, tacked on a new feature to your Defense action, etc. Something that everyone gets, tied to your character level, that I could do anything I want with and not feel like a chump.

I was dissapointed that there is nothing to date on converting Prestige Classes to 5th Edition subclass variations.

I hope they will deliver the promised 'guides to converting from X edtiion to 5th' soon, with their online offering.

Archtypes will end up replacing and being the main mood of custimization. I dont even think we will see very many other classes, with the exception of psionics. Even then, I only see two or three classes getting published for psionic rules. I agree with Macv12 about the chum feeling. I dont flavor myself as a Min/Maxer by nature, but the strength of those combat feats(you know the ones im talking about) is astunding to me. Espically with all the other roleplay heavy feats that exist as well. The fact that Hand crossbows are the most broken thing RAW, this edition does have enough DM fiat that I dont think very many people will be able to dual weild them like a gunslinger.

As far as multiclassing though, There are only a few class features above 17 that I think are super wow or big game changers, espically with the 20th level features. Multiclassing is best done after 5th level in my opinion though, espically for martial characters that want/need that second attack.
