Proposed sorcerer modification

So....  Sorcerers tend to all take the same few metamagics, and that seems boring.  And limiting...but you really can't afford to skip the really useful ones.

If sorcerers were given access to all metamagic, or even a lot more.... that may be overpowered.

But what if there was a 'cost' associated.

When they get metamagic, they get access to all of them, but the point cost is doubled.  Then the ones they select at lvl 2, 11, etc could be used at 'half cost'.  This would give them more versatility with there already limited spell selection, but still make the other metamagics much more expensive to use.

(Other options would be to triple the cost, or instead of 2x 3x, could just add a straight 1,2,3,etc extra points for the 'untrained' ones.)

I believe you are solving a problem that doesn't actually exist.

I myself are sneaking into the realms of controller on my Sorcereress. Mainly because I'm taking the cold stuff so I can slow/imobilize and shift targets or make them go around roadblocks. I've got options too; as if I find myself lacking in something, I can bring up a weapon to change keywords or refluff.

If you're playing a spontanious caster; you get less options for your easy casting. General rule of thumb.

The Sha'kir wizard for example is basically a sorcerer with wizard spells. (Very close at least).

I see zero problems with the class... unless you want to go down the path that it's very squishy :P but that's a given!

Sounds like a new sub-class

Mage:  Mages have both magic in their blood, but also study it.

1: Increase the spells known by your Int modiier.

6: You learn 2 extra meta-magic.

14: You can lean any spell.  You can cast spells as rituals.

18: You can spend 2 SP to cast a spell you don't know.

level 18 ability is way to powerful. I will just not learn wish then cast it for 2 SP. Hell, i will connvert all my spell slots into SP and cast any spell i want

I'd fix level 1 ability to say something along the lines of: Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, including at level 1, you can learn 1 additional spell per level; you can only use this ability only to a maximum equal to your Intelligence Modifier, ever.

Or find a less clunky way to word that. Otherwise you'd be level 1 with 6 known spells, which is sorta silly. Or a Wizard could go for a 1-level dip and ALSO know +5 more spells...

And yeah, level 18 ability needs a re-tweak. Like the idea, but 2 SP is crazy! Plus it does weird things with a Sorcerer's spell point economy, and just becomes better to "unlearn" spells than to learn them, cast them, then recover them. Maybe make it scale somehow (2 SP+Spell Level) and/or set a cap (no spells of 7th level or above)

But! I know that probably came off the top of your head! Looks like a neat start

Well, maybe not Character level 1, but certainly Class level 1 (with MC).

But +3 spells known at level 1 is still pretty daunting! Note how warlocks get something similar, but only Cantrips, with a restriction (need the book on your person), and at 3rd level! I know classes are balanced as a whole, but also within themselves, but something worth noting :-)

So yeah, I think slowing the progression is a good idea.

Oh! Neat idea! Maybe have it so you can learn spells from the Wizard spell list? I think that'd be neat! Though you're welcome to limit that, too, like non-ritual spells only (despite Sorcerers not having a ritual casting enabler)

I definitely like learning more meta-magic. One of my problems with sorcerers, really. They can only choose from, what, 8-ish options? Only getting 4 total? And you only have TWO until you reach 10th level? Blech!

I agree that having to invest in Intelligence is more than enough price to offset the value of the first level power. My question would be: if your intelligence goes up later in the game, do you learn more spells?

The Sorcerer allows you to trade out spells known as you go up in level, so those additional spells become quite powerful. You can ditch them for higher level options.

I think the biggest gripe I've heard about Sorcerers is their inability to use more metamagic feats. So here's a thought, which could apply to the mage, or to standard sorcerers. What if you could change your metamagic feats after a long rest? Sort of like how you change prepared spells as a wizard?

yes, boosting Int would boost your known spells. that said, it's still a big sacrifice. changing meta-magic could work. but tht seems more like a sorcerer sorcerer then a wizard one.
