PSA: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/wizards-coast-community-forums-be-shut-down-2015-09-16

Wizards will be shutting down the forums and deleting information/threads, effective October 29, 2015.

We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.

Yeah I'm reading nought but bullshit excuses for what amounts to "We want to save money, screw you community."

Not to mention what's that do to Adventure League which is a WoTC thing and thus not really usable on third party websites?

Good to know!

i remember this kind of thing happening in the past. Usually player designed content would be deleted and magically appear in a supplement 6-12 months later with credit being given to someone else. I think I will backup my spells. I have about 180 pages backed up from the D&DNext playtest period of posting.

No,Noctaem is right. This sucks.

I am currently on GitP and Enworld along with here.... and this is by far the best forum of the three. There is more diversity and a wider selection of content.

And when I played Magic, this was (again) the best forum by far.

Facebook/twitter/tumblr is nothing like the same experience and simply cannot do what can be done on a forum such as this.

Let's set aside the efficacy of the forums here. I can see why they're retiring them, for all the reasons that they say and that have been raised here. What I don't see is why they can't retain an archive, as a way of, you know, acknowledging the decade+ of "vibrant user base and extensive history" of "a former foundation of our community" they've helped cultivate instead of simply saying "we acknowledge you".

The cost of maintaining an archive is minimal (especially since it doesn't require any staff), and the size of the benefit is enormous given the work we've put in here over the years.

This community is more helpful and knowledgeable than reddit. Reddit is also terrible for archiving information. I don't want to use twitter. The forum here was pretty active, even if a bit small. This sucks.

Not painful, assuming you use BBCode.

For those who do not know, EN world has opened a thread specifically as a lifeboat for the preservation of the content on these forums. If you have your stuff saved, and ready to repost,  that seems like as good a place as any to start rebuilding your legacy.

Wow, defintely not something I'm happy about. I've had a lot of questions answered here and never even looked at any other place except ENWorld, where I don't even have an account. This was the clear place to go and find DnD information.

I complain a lot about these forums and some of the endless personality conflicts on them, but at the end of the day they've made my DnD expeirence better. Hopefully I can find something useful when it all comes tumbling down, since as much as we may wantg to, it doesn't seem like there is any way to stop this from happening

I don't use reddit, or facebook and I only use twitter to ask a dev a question. I am not going to search all over the frikken internet for social media places to try and find information that currently is and should be readily available on a centralized forum.

I'll be at Enworld still. Also, I made an account at the GitP forums, which I wasn't aware of before this thread. I'm sort of a forum junky, and mostly like to lurk while I kill time. Really sad to see these forums go, as they have their own niche which I rather enjoy.

I wonder if there's anyone who still posts that's older to the boards than myself (I've survived something like three board overhauls, which in forum terms is like living through a world war).   There are a few old names I remember, in part because of a file of quotes from various posts or signatures accumulated over the years, but I'm sure there are plenty of others that lack such a convenient reminder.

You've been on this forum since before I properly knew what D&D was. Possibly since before I got the appeal of forums, period. It couldn't have been earlier than 2004 or so that I got involved in the RPG Maker 3 board.

I've moved out of forums before and been fine. My contributions to other forums have probably already disappeared, but at least it I had long since moved past thinking about them before they did. Being evicted is a very different feeling.

This is bogus! Don't make me get a twitter or reddit account to be able to ask questions and participate in discussions! Fb is and always has been dead as a discussing ground(it's simply not meant for that)...this leaves only one option...to go over to Enworld...but honestly I don't see any reason to dump this forum as is. The forum IS alive, even without visible moderation/administration. In fact it seems to me that WotC hasn't allocated much rescoures to it anyway. So really - why pull the plug?

Sad to see the D&D Encounters board (which was really only left there as an archive, but it still had activity) go along with all of the content. It will also be sad to see the work of people who have passed on disappear.

I think from now on, I'll just keep my builds and stuff to myself. I can't be bothered to move stuff around -- it's too much like work, and this should be a hobby.

I've put a thread over on Previous Editions General where I've posted my collection of quotes from these boards (well, mostly from these boards).  It's a fun read as well as a reminder of a few old names, and if anyone has some of their own, I'd love to see them before it all vanishes.

What I want to know is, is there going to be some official place where all these social media posts are collected and organized so that I can just go to one place and read whatever I want rather than searching for answers to a specific question all over social media?

Dear Char Op,

I want to say thanks for years of helping me drive my DM mad. Whether it was my rogue/psion/shadowdancer/elocator that could walk on walls and spring attack from and back into shadows, my orbizard with the ability to incapacitate vast numbers of enemies who couldn't make the outrageous will save, or any number of other characters you helped improve, you made them more fun with your guides, combos, tricks, and critiques. I'm going to miss you. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Hey guys, If you are looking for the place to go, I have found it.  DnDForum at Forums for Gamers.  It is devoted to just DnD, and is set up to provide all the same options we have here.

Enworld and GitP are good for what they are (I am an active member in both locations). But I spend most of my time on the WotC boards because I prefer them.  There is a different attitude here, a different moderating feel, and a lot more variety in forum topics and threads created.   We could try and ‘convince’ the other sites to greatly expand their forum offerings, but if they wanted that, they could have already done it.

dndforum is a much better match for what we already have, it already has all of the different forums that we are used to. The moderation policy assumes we are all adults. (Adults don’t have thin overly sensitive skin, but they also don’t toss juvenile insults) There is a *functioning* search feature, and you will be able to personalize the site with a number of skin options.

Since the forum is new, the members will have a much stronger influence of how it could and should develop.  I think it is the best option for anyone that likes these forums, and suggest you give it a try.

Please note, the current look is the ‘default’ skin.  That will change shortly, and you will also have a list of choices to personalize the look. Including uploading avatars and contributing artwork for the site.

I know some folks have started the move to EnWorld or GitP, but I really think dndforum will be a better fit for us.
