| #1Logain08Dec 12, 2014 6:05:29 | Hello everyone,
Last session my paladin kicked the bucket and rather unceremoniously died. He will be brought back to live to continue with his quest, so that's fortunate. My question is: is there any information about what happens to a character when he dies and then comes back? Is there any lore that says what you remember about 'the beyond' and what it was like. I just want to know for roleplaying reasons. Do you come back the same, changed, with new information?
For the record, we have a homemade campaign, but use the Greyhawk setting gods. But any information on this topic is appreciated, also from other campaign settings such as Faerûn.
Many thanks in advance! |

Even though gods are immortal, they may still die. Its something you need to decide for your homegame. I would probably go with a general "tunnel with a light at the end" experince, except that when the player is revived, that light brings them straight back to being resurected. you could even say that the soul never made it to the afterlife, make it more like one long out of body experince. They have flashes of memories of seeing their body being handled by the rest of the party and having the rites of revival performed on them. |

In our campaign, the gods are either dead or gone due to some cataclysmic event. One of the things the campaign wants to explore is how paladins and clerics keep their powers even without a link to their gods. So as much as I would have wanted a heart-to-heart with my deity or the archangel thereof, in our campaign the place would've been empty :-)
But I think I do want it to have an affect on the personality of my character. The spell revive dead stipulates that coming back isn't the most easy or happy of experiences so it could be interesting to explore that a little bit. Maybe add a bit of roleplay backlash as the psychological cost of being revived. Or maybe I could ask my DM whether I could use the madness rules from the DMG to have some erratic moments, some form of PTSD.
I just don't want it to be purely mechanical: I do some long rests until the death penalty wears off and I'm good as new again :-) |

Maybe death was an empty experience, and that could cause you some fear of dying issues for fear that maybe you aren't brought back and are left in nothingness. Maybe you find "something" else is out there giving you your powers.
Lots of fun concepts you could play there. |
