Question about Polymorph

I know this is likely a "ask your DM" kind of question, but I would love to hear what you all think as well. When you Polymorph, the target takes the stats and HP of its new form. So when it's HP is reduced to zero, the target itself doesn't die, though it takes the overflow damage. We all know that, I think. But what happens when you can kill a target through other means? What if I Polymorph the target into a fish, and I'm in the forest? Does it suffocate since it's not in water and can't process the oxygen properly? Does doing that kill the target properly, or reduce the fish form to zero HP and the target reverts to its original form?

I can't find it at the moment, but I remember someone asked one of the devs a similar question on twitter. The response basically amounted to: "a polymorphed creature dying from other means aside from HP reverts back to their old form, but is still dead."

As for your example above, suffocating merely drops a creature's current HP to zero, so once the creature runs out of air, they'd simply revert back to their old form.

Who cares if you have a Bag of Devouring? Just throw the fish in there and then, even if it reverts, it still gets ett.

If you turn a human into a fish in the forest, it flops to the ground and suffocates, since it can't breathe air.  Suffocating drops the fish to 0 hp before it actually kills the fish.  The fish first drops to 0 hp and is dying, not dead, and polymorph explicitly says when the target drops to 0 hp, it reverts to its original form.  So before it actually dies, it returns to human form, to its original hp, and is able to breathe normally.

What happens if you polymorph someone into a fish and a cat eats it?  That's up to the DM... but I wouldn't want to be that cat.

A bag of holding would work just as well.  The inside is a vacuum, so turn someone into a fish, or anything really that will fit into the bag and toss them in.  Once they revert back to normal form, they'll suffocate and die.
