Using v3.5 (yes i know this is the v5 forum, will get to that in a minute), we did a homebrew Ranger where he was a trapper, rather than a hunter type.  IE, he lost favoured enemy, but gained trapsense etc, but no sneak attack of the rogue.

We're trying to take this v3.5 build and turn it into v5 build.  Would the player have to multiclass or could someone come up with a different archetype other than the beast master or the hunter please to help accommodate this character.

The character in question ideal is an anti poacher type.

Many thanks in advance.

As a suggestion,  heres the following:

3rd level thieves tools, and 1 extra skill prof from ranger list.  Favoured enemy bonuses apply to finding traps and to setting traps against them

7th level:  Quick trap.  Can improvises traps on the spot, terrain willing. 1 Premade hunting trap can be set as a bonus action once per round

11th level:  Improved traps:  Proficency bonus and wis modifer to be added to the DC of traps, (DC13 strength base)

15th level:  Flurry of activiity:  2 turns in first round of combat, one at normal init, second at init -10

Is this too OP or what could be changed to make it right?

Many thanks

The level 15 feature is pretty OP.  And i'd rearrage the features a bit.

IMO:

3: You gain proficency and expertise in thieves tools.  The DC of any trap you set is 8+prof+wis, or it's base, which ever is higher.  You can spend 10 minutes improvising a trap.

7: You can place a trap as a bonus acition.  You spend 5 minute improvising a trap.

11: You can add your Dex modifier to damage for any trap you set.

15:  You can improvise a trap as an action.
