Ranger Animal Companions?

Hi All,

 

So, I'm starting a young group off with DnD for the first time.  I just had someone select a Ranger as their class when I thought they were going to be a fighter.  So, I'm not certain about the animal companion.  Do you just let them pick something?  Is there a guide as to what type of critter they can take?  Any advice on making it happen?

I would let them select based on the area they are in.  You won't find a polar bear in the tropical forest for instance, but otherwise no need to restrict them.

 

Beastmaster's are overall a weak compaired to other classes.
