Good morning,

I am coming back to DnD and realy enjoying 5e. Old time 1st/2nd edition Player and DM. Tried Pathfinder while waiting for 5e and looking forward to the MM and DMG.

Anyway, playing a home game last friday and one person is playing a Ranger. Looking at Favored Enemy I am a little confused. The book says that Favored Enemy states that the Ranger is experienced with studying, tracking, hunting and talking with the enemy. It then goes on to list the advantages:

Advantage on Wis (Survival) checks to track

Advantage on Int checks to recall information about them

One language that is spoken by the favored enemy.

No bonus to hit or dmg? am I missing something?

And just to say it, I went through the first 25 pages of threads and couldn't find anyone else asking this question. I can only assume I am being a bone head and missing something in the text.

Thanks. Just have to wrap my head around it. I might house rule a minor +bonus to dmg or maybe to stealth rolls. Hmmm, actually I like the idea of a bonus to stealth. It is in keeping with the idea of hunting their enemy...

They get bonus damage at level 20.

But, ranger's don't need it.  They've got alot of damage that works on every creature.

Mellored,

Thanks. They are 2nd level and having a blast. I was reading through some of the dmg buffs for Hunter and I agree, won't be hurting for damage output. Guess it is just a matter of fogeting old cornerstones of classes and going with what is there.

We used to say because EGG (E. Gary Gygax) says so. Have to come up with a new saying for Mearls/Crawford.

The Favored Enemy class feature isn't meant to be their big damage feature anymore like it was in the older Editions... They just get big damage to everybody now.

Yeah, it's the Level 20 Foe Slayer ability.

The Hunter class features to me represent your experience at fighting certain types of enermies, however they've accepted that the skills at fighting hordes of orcs or dodging dragon breaths might be transferable.

Yeah, Favored Enemy is an utterly useless feature. It's just an extra language.

RAMI,

I like it. Playing again this Friday and we will see how it progresses. She took Human and Orc as her favored enemy so we will see how it works out.

Thinking about adding minor bonus to skill checks vs Favored Enemy. Maybe advantage on Stealth and Intimidation. Will wait to see how thing progress when she gets to lvl 3-5.
