Going to be playing a Ranger soon in a solo campaign. Trying to find out what fighting style to pick. I will have a pet that fights with me, using rules me and my friend came up with unrestricting the attack trade off. Not sure if I should take archery for more realiable range, dualing for my sword and board melee, or defense for versitility of always having it wether or not im in melee or range.

Also any suggestion on feats and skills are helpful, will most likely be Wood-Elf with starting stats below.

Starting Stats:

10 Str                12 Str (For Shield Master Prone Shove)

16 Dex              16 Dex

14 Con     or       14 Con

12 Int                 10 Int

14 Wis                14 Wis

10 Cha               10 Cha

Starting Skills(Most Likely):

Acrobatics

Atheletics

Nature

Perception

Stealth

Survival

Using Non-Magical Ranger Modified Class

Edited Beast Master

New Beast Master Archetype

Level 3

I will obtain my pet, which I will already have since I will be starting this level.

Probably will be taking panther for its' stealthy nature or wolf becasue it's more solid.

The pet gets one action and can move, all on my turn.

It gains my proficency bonus in AC, hit, Saving throws it's proficent in(none) and ability checks it's proficent in.

The pet has d6 +con mod per Ranger level. Max d6+con for 1st level.

Level 7

As a bonus action I can have my pet disengage, dash, dodge or help(basically rogues cunning action, but for my pet instead.)

Level 11

This one will give the pet a tiny amount of aoe, somthing like hordebreaker probably.

Level 15

When an attacker that you can see hits your beast companion with an attack, you can call out a warning. If your beast companion can hear you, it can use its reaction to halve the attacks's damage against it.

For a recommendation, I'll need more info. What's your pet? What homebrew rules have you come up with? What's the rest of the party?

Will write them down in detail in a minute. Also, me and my pet will be the party. Also I will probably be starting at level 3.

Don't have the exact rules infront of me that we made up, but will do my best.

Will be using the modified rules for non-magic ranger linked here.

I will most likely be going sword-and-board  for melee and a longbow for range.

(If someone has a good argument for dual wield or two-handed str I'd like to hear it.)

For sword n board, pick a Finesse weapon for the sword. I suggest rapier. For fighting style, I suggest Archery, since so many of the Rangers spells focus on ranged abilities.

Shield + Handbow is an option.  So you can swap to shield + rapier.
