Recovering Hit Dice

According to the Player's Handbook:

 

A short rest is a period o f downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds. A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below.

 

So here is my question: How do you recover ALL of your Hit Dice?

 

If on day one you have 8 hit dice, and then you take a long rest, you are down to 4 hit dice. Day 2, after a long rest you are down to 2 hit dice. Day 3 -  you are down to 1 hit dice. By day four, you are down to 1/2 hit dice.

 

Neither the PHB nor the DMG from the basic game have any indication of when a character recovers ALL hit dice. Please advise.

Correct. Say I have 8 hit dice and I spend 6 during one day, leaving me with 2. During the long rest at the end of the day, I recover half of my max hit dice, or four, leaving me with six. During the following day ,I spend 2. During the following long rest I recover another 4 hit dice, putting me back at full. To simplify, if you spend more than half of your hit dice in a day, it will require more than one long rest to recover them all.

Which encourages DMs to run campaigns with either periods of down time between adventures, or periods of espionage, diplomacy or travel to allow full recovery after a stretch of combat.
