Religious Rogue?

I've always been fascinated with the idea of a cleric/thief, perhaps in part simply because I'm of a practical turn of mind and always therefore end up there( the most useful---and fun---abilities are healing and stealing!) when allowed to play in a classless system or in something like Baldur's Gate where you're the whole party, but I'm also inspired in part by stories I've read of Butch Cassidy ( a local hometown character for me), who although he was not actually a priest, of course, was known to be quite religious except for the Commandment against stealing( in one delightful incident, he eluded capture by lawmen who were looking for him in a town where he was stranded for a week by the expedient of buying a case of whiskey, sousing his clothes in it and pretending to get really drunk every day.  They knew Butch was a good Mormon boy and never touched hard liquor, even printed that on the Wanted posters, so of course that alcoholic who looked just like him HAD to be someone else!) and really, even allowing for some amount of romanticism, to be in general a pretty good guy for a bad guy, always avoiding violence whenever possible, even when it would have been easy to get away with, and showing a fair amount of Robin Hood tendency at times.

However, multiclass builds, especially divine+rogue, always have been rather tough to build in D&D.   So far, it looks like it might be not totally impossible in 5th, but how would you recommend going about this?  Would Paladin work better than Cleric, perhaps?  Obviously needs to follow a chaotic deity...I'm usually chronically averse to playing humans if there's another option (have to spend my whole life pretending to be one, why do it in a game where I don't have to?), but can see some sense in it for a historically-inspired character.

What about a DEX/WS trickster cleric of Mask with the criminal background? Perhaps taking a level of rogue and dual wielding finesse weapons.

Just take trickster or maybe knowledge domain. there are plenty of Trickster gods, gods of secrets,  that I could see working for this build., I will say that this seems very much something I would roleplay as being an old 3.5 Favored Soul kind of thing. Less "i worship this god/dess of theives" and more this god/dess has become a patron of you. But there are a lot of ways to play it.

I would stick to only a few levels of cleric, and probably take Arcane Trickster, but thats just personal prefrence. That gets very MAD since you would need Dex, Int, and Wis.  Int could be fairly low as there are plenty of Illusion spells that work just as well with or with out a good Int score, so YMMV.

+1 for trickster cleric. You can give other's proficency in stealth, make an illusory duplicate, all while healing. They do just fine with a dex/wis.

And one of my favorite 'combos'.... Theif 3, with Healing Feat and a Healing Kit, can do some pretty decent healing as a Bonus action during combat.

Does it have to be divine healing, and how much of each set of abilities would you be looking for.  You could go straight rogue, human variant, acolyte background, ritual caster (cleric) and healer feats.  You could also do the opposite with a trickster cleric and criminal background.  The actual concept is doable from those extremes just based on background and skill options.  The question is what features from each class are important?

Trickster Cleric 8 / Arcane Trickster 12 looks interesting, but I don't know how it would level.

Since the stealing part of what you want is tied to tool proficiency, you could have a cleric who can heal and steal with the right tools at hand with no need to be a rogue.

If you could afford the stats, you could ad some bard to it so he could steal hearts too.

The current multiclass rules aren't actually very good for "hybrid" builds, where you want a good dose of two classes each.     No, that's what key subclasses are for, as we see most obviously with the eldritch knight and arcane trickster.    The current multi-class rules are really there for a one or two level dip.

So, yes, the Trickster Cleric is your best option in this case.   Guidance is your friend if you want to be really good at key skill moments.   Work with your GM on tool proficencies during downtime.   And grab feats for more skills - that's what they're there for.

I'm finally going to start playing my "holy assassin" tonight. Half-elf. Acolyte background. Rogue (assassin) / Monk (shadow) / Archfey Warlock (bladepact).

He's not really a "cleric" per se (in the channelling divinity/spells sense), but definitely a religious and devout servant of the elven church. Although the warlock stuff does represent aspects of his direct spiritual connection to his order's divine patrons.

I have a level 7 Arcane Trickster that is a Priest of the Hypnotic Coin and reveres Tymora.  The DM is cool if he casts cure wounds scrolls.

Thanks, all.  I hadn't spotted that about being able to get proficiency with thieves tools independently from multiclassing rogue( though it still might be worth considering either way), that makes things a LOT easier.
