I'm unable to decide between making a rogue and making a barbarian. Is there a nice synergistic build of multiclassing the two? I will be starting at level 1 and using the standard array.

Other then being fast, i don't see anything in paticular that's good.

That said, i don't see anything in paticular that's bad either.

If your primary purpose is damage I recommend you check out Vengeance paladin: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1J0lwywzGvldoo_Av-9j_lNDxN-Sdqp59_YWVacS1Gsg/edit#gid=254846550

His DPR is greater than barbarian and rogue.

If you want a sneaky brute or simply don't feel like refluffing a paladin carry on.

rogue main stat is Dex

Barbarian main stat is Strenght/constitution So already this is a lack of synergy

Rogue best build would be a range build with a halfling

Barbarian best build is a great weapon half orc  or dwarf, maybe human with a good feat

Fascinating!

So the reason I want a Barbarian is because the group needs a Tank/Melee character.  We currently have a Monk , Sorcerer, Cleric, Paladin, and Bard.

The reason I want a Rogue is because we need someone to pick locks, disarm traps, and I want to try out the Assassin subclass and crafting poisons. (I'm willing to wait for the DMG till this is actually useful)

What I came up with so far is a Mountain Dwarf Barbarbarian Pirate who will Multiclass to Rogue at Second level, and then stick with barbarian till fourth level, then go back to Rogue for a few levels, and then I'll decide from there. (Or maybe I want assasin so bad I'll stick with rogue for 4 levels and sacrifice the HP gain).

My starting stats are 17 str, 14 dex, 15 con, 10 int, 12 wis, 8 charisma. (I'm thinking maybe I should do 13 dex, and 16 con but I'm not sure)  My starting equipment is going to be scalemail armor (so AC 16 with the 14 dex), 2 handaxes (it's a thrown weapon so counts as ranged for sneak attack) .  This for now sacrifices my bonus action later, but if I take Totem Spirit then it will be many levels until I need an extra bonus action. I'm thinking at that point I might switch to a spear/trident since it's also a thrown weapon but can be versatile to reach 1d8.  I prefer the thrown weapons over say a rapier incase I need a range option.

Basically, I'll get extra turns with advantage and added sneak attack damage, as well as being able to craft poisons and disarm locks/traps. I'll also have good saves for Str, Con, and Dex (with the barabrian abilities)

I'm a missing out on something? Is there something better I can do?  Am I hurting the party with this build?

Mage armor doesn't stack with monk unarmed defense.

Ac 16 is the highest ac a barbarian can get at first level and still rage...

Highest AC period I can see (magic items notwithstanding) is 20 (Barbarian's Unarmored Defense, 20 in Dex, 20 in Con).

With the rogue MC, the barbarian could take expertise in Athletics.  Now you can double you proficiency bonus when you shove or grapple, and if you're raging, the contested Strength (Athletics) check would be at advantage.

Rogue (Assassin) 3 gives you an Auto-Critical hit to utilize your Barbarian Crit-Boosters.  Assassin trademark: cut in half with a Great Axe from the shadows!

I want to optimize melee damage and optimizing tanking. The barbarian looks good at both and the rogue looks like it can boost damage further.

Should I aim for barb 1/ rogue 3 or get the stat boost asap and do barb 4 and then rogue 4?
