Roleplaying clerics as knights?

So paladins have hijacked the "holy knight" trope in D&D for a few decades now. Although 5th edition (I think wisely) moves paladins away from gods and more towards "champions of righteousness," while clercis are "healers and warriors."

Anyway, in a new campaign I am going to be playing in, I want to play the stereotypical holy knight. There are no healers in the party, so I will be playing the cleric. Supposedly, Gygax and Co. had crusaders and knights templar (and Van Helsing?) in mind when they created the cleric and NOT the paladin, correct?

So would it be appropriate to roleplay a cleric as a knight. Sir X of Pelor's Hand or whatever? Obviously, I can do almost anything I want with my character, but I want to know if you believe it is in the spirit of the cleric class to actually be roleplayed as a holy knight and not just a proselytizing priest of whatever.

Thoughts?

Sure take noble background and War domain and you're good to go.

Sounds good to me. The standard D&D cleric has always had significant combat capability. Arguably even more so in 5th edition where everybody has the same BAB progression (read proficiency bonus).

I think both paladin and clerics fill the holy knight role really well.

Note that just because you don't have a healer doesn't force you to be a Cleric, there are plenty of classes that can handle healing, including Paladin.

I think a War/Tempest/Life Cleric would work very well as a Knight.

Works well with the younger children entering the clergy to avoid land being subdivided or to deal with the fact only the eldest sibling inherits it.

I'm also very pleased that 5E moves the Paladin away from the Cleric with the Oath being more important than religious devotion.

I recall 2E PHB had the Knights Templars specifically mentioned as an inspiration for the Cleric Class.

The Paladin was far more about Charlemange's Paladins (well dur..) and the Knights of the Round Table.

I have played a couple campaigns (short ones) as a Cleric of the War domain. Noble background varient Knight.  Once as an impoverished one from a fallen house and another as a 4th generation Sir Gwald.

I think it fit perfectly, you can retain some measure of healing for support, and still be a threat in combat with your heavy weapon or sword and shield.

I say enjoy!

I think it would be an excellent fit and a lot of fun to play!
