How does someone sleep in the woods in a solo adventure where taking watch is undoable?

good hiding skill check? leomund tiny hut? Elf who stay awere while in trance, find NPC you can trust, alert trap (the spell alert, or put some rope with bells, lock yourself (barricadde the door to your room, make sure you come back in town every night to sleep at the inn, etc...

Your DM know you are doing a solo campaign and he shouldn't put obstacle that you cannot overcome. Solo campaign are usually tailored on the character (if you do a solo campaign with a fighter, there should not be a obstacle where you need a spell to succeed.

Most of my characters that I have ever played would, if they were without companions that are their equals (read: other PCs), travel with subordinates; My pack bearer, personal cook, and guide can all take a watch.

Two of my characters, however, would actually travel entirely alone and would sleep through the night just fine: the first by way of sleeping in a very well hidden place further camouflaged via expertly painted sheets of canvas, and the second by casting mordenkainen's magnificent mansion and sleeping in comfort and safety.

The same way Katniss did? Climb up a tree and bind yourself to the trunk...

Further I agree with Qwerty.

You could always sleep up a tree. Climb it with all your kit and then use your rope to lash yourself to the trunk and the hope your knot holds.

Otherwise you will need to find a secluded location to hide in and set up tripwire alarms or have access to suitable magic such as Alarm (1st, Ranger/Wizard) or Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd, Bard/Wizard), both of which are rituals that you can gain access to via the Ritual Caster feat (Alarm when you take the feat and Leomund's Tiny Hut can be copied from a found spell scroll).

Tie a hammock between two trees.  Most creatures will be looking around the trunk, not out in the canopy.  If your hammock is camouflaged you might look like a bird nest in the dark.

Find some bramblebushes to cut and re-arrange into a little fort.  Erase your tracks as best you can.  Animals that find you will not want to get a nosefull of thorns on the way in.  (see also Brer Rabbit "PLEASE don't throw me in the briar patch!")

Find some random woodsman's cottage and ask for hospitality for the night.

edit: Ask your DM if he thinks a Random Encounter in the night will advance the story, or hamper it.

This can be fun to roleplay. Does he set traps or have easily startled animal companion? How does he hide in a tree, a pit, a cave? Does a perception check wak him?

Good things to think about.
