So you multi class Bard4/Cleric1 and then what...

I've been reading the various suggestions and guides to spellcasting classes (notably Bards and Wizards thank you to those who provide this stuff it's fantastic) and I'm now seriously considering multiclassing my level 4 Lore bard with a level 1 cleric before I start my next session...

So my question now is... what now? We are starting the game at level 5 and I am going to play the bard to hang back, cast buffing/debuffing and throw bardic inspiration and spot healing word when applicable.

Aside from the AC bonus I'll get, which domain seems suitable to suit the purpose of buff/debuff with spot healing?

1) Knowledge domain with command/identify spell sounds tempting

2) Life Domain also sounds intriguing with bless and swap healing word out for cure wounds... althought I don't like the idea of my spot healing becoming touch instead of range...

3) Temptest Domain with fog cloud to cause confusion and thunderwave as a last resort AOE/move if I'm in a pinch.

Finally, this will be my first shot at multi-classing, so what are some common paths to take after I hit level 7? Is it common to bump the Cleric up to level 2? or to focus back on the Bard and work toward Bard6/Cleric 1 to get additional secrets?

All suggestions and comments are welcome that apply both for and against the multiclass in general as well as the proper path to take.

Thank you.

you might want to hold out for 1 more level, going bard 5. you get some impressive spells and short rest insperation.
note that you prepare cleric spells in addition to your bard spells. so you can have both healing word and cure wounds. also clerics can switch spells around easily enough.
overall i would suggest knowlage if your only doing a spot of healing. though trickster can also be good in some groups.
afterwards i would just continue to bard 17.

I’m going to be that guy and ask: what is your religion right now? How are you going to explain your sudden calling to become a cleric, and even more rare, get chosen for powers. Given that you’re a lore Bard maybe go for the Knowledge domain?

Or to put it another way, why not just RP it and let that make the decision for you?

Unless you have a super good reason, it is a big disadvantage to multi class dual spell caster classes until level 17.   Imagine at level 16/Cleric 1.  You would have access to wish if you were level 17 bard.  Hypnotic pattern is great at level 5 bard.
