I have a question regarding the Wizard's Spellbook and Scrolls of spells.

 

I know that the Wizard has by far the largest list of possible spells, but there are quite a few spells that the Wizard is unable to learn due to them not be on the available list, so here is my question;

 

If a Party discovers a Magic scroll among a Troll's Horde, if the spell is not regularly a part of the Wizard's list of spells, can the Wizard still learn the spell and be able to cast it?

 

Better example is; A Party fo Four discover a Magic Scroll of Contagion, a 5th-Level Necromancy Spell. The Wizard is the only spell-caster in the entire party and wants to learn to cast the spell. Can the Wizard copy the spell into his book and be able to cast it? It's not a spell that the Wizard would normally learn any other way.

The Wizarrd could however look at the spell scroll and then seek to create a facsimile of it which could be used by a wizard using the spell research rules...

 

I would allow this unless the spell was extremely archetype-themeatic like Arms of Hadar or Eldritch Blast.

the croll of contagion is a divine spell, on the scroll they explain how to pray to your god to afflict your target with a disease, your Wizard do not pray to God to cast spell, he manipulate the magical weave by himself without the help of the gods. So no Wizard cannot learn the contagion spell from a scroll.

 

Back in previous edition, a wizard could not even learn a spell from his spell list if the scroll was from a divine caster (so a cleric wrote a scroll of dispel magic, the wizard couldn't use it even if the wizard know dispel magic, since hte scroll was divine not arcane.

 

But like said previously, the wizard could use the "research" a spell and create a new spell: "[insert wizard name] diseased touch". Furthermore you could even try to change it so it become range attack instead of a melee attack, but the slimy doom option cannot be achieve (because it's too OP and your DM removes it from your research).
