Sup boys

After reading your comments and suggestions, i totally rework the archetype, in fact, only the name stay the same, lol.

Lots of good ideas there, like the paladin version, but i didn't want a divine champion, i wanted a fighter who has a potent arcane bond with a weapon and use it to channel magic. Much like the original spellsword (a prestige class back then)

I will be making a paladin > oath of Arcane, but not in this thread...

Sooooo here's the new, and hopefully improve version.

Spellsword (fighter archetype)

Spellcasting

When you reach 3rd level you gain the ability to cast spells.

Cantrips: as the EK

Spell Slots:  as the EK

Spells Known: as the EK, BUT you chose from the evocation and necromancy school on the wizard spell list.

Spellcasting Ability: Intelligence

Arcane Weapon Bond: at 3rd level, you perform a day long ritual that allows you to meld arcane power with your figthing abilities. The weapôn must meet the requirements, as show below, once the ritual is complete, you and your weapon are one. The weapon counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming  resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. You can use your bond weapon as a spellcasting focus for your spellsword spells. Finely, you can perform the somatic components of your spells while fighting with your bond weapon.

Elemental Burst: starting at 7th level, as a bonus action, you can expend one spellsword spell slot to sheet your bond weapon with elemental energy. Choose one damage types; acid, cold, fire, lightning or thunder, your weapon deal extra damage of the chosen type when it hits. The extra damage is 1d4 for a 1st level spell slot, and goes up by one dice increment for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 1d10. It last for a number of rounds equal to half your level in this class plus your INTELLIGENCE modifier.

Disrupting Strike: at 10 th level, when you hit a creature with your bond weapon, the creature has disadvantage on the saving throws make to maintain its concentration.

Arcane Recharge: at 15th level, your connection to your bond weapon improved, you can now tap into his magic to replenish your own. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recharge. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal or less than a third of your spellsword level (rounded up) and none of the slots can be 4th level.

Improved Elemental Burst: beginning at 18th level, when you use your Elemental Burst feature, you gain resistance to the chosen damage type. In addition, your Elemental Burst  now ignore resistance to damage of the chosen type.

Arcane Bond Weapon restrictions: must be a melee weapon (thrown works) without the heavy, reach or two-handed properties (versatile works, even if used two-handed) Only one weapon can be bond at a time, performing the ritual on another weapon break the link on the old weapon and the new weapon become your bond to you. Magical weapon can be bond, but artifact or sentient weapon can't.

Alright boys, this is it, hope i did it right this time (not being to OP), one thing sure: it's a lot closer to what i wanted than before.

your class concept already exist. it's call a paladin using smite spell to channel his spell into his weapon the paladin already got your arcane strike ability as divine smite and he got more smite spells as well adding different effect. He already have auras that give protection to himself (and to the party). refluff it so your spell come from your blood (like a sorcerer) instead of from a god

then if you still really want your spellsword, it's too powerfull as it is, you gain all the EK abilities, plus sorceror point, plus the most powerfull metamagic of the sorcerer (twinned). Take some abilities away

Then arcane strike scaling can be abuse to something way too powerfull, otherwise it's too easy to reach 1d20 damage. Then if you crit you do 2d20 damage. If your an half orc you do 3d20 damage (plus the regular weapon damage)

Yeah, what you want is an Arcane Paladin, basically. Most of their Smite spells do damage other than Radiant, and Divine Smite covers Radiant itself.

Oath of the Arcane would be pretty nice to have.

Not to hijack the thread, but we might as well roll with the idea, right? Perhaps instead of Divine Arcana, you recover one spell slot equal to your level or lower (or once per long rest. At lv15, now you do it once per short rest. Or twice per long rest. I dunno. I don't like giving them the whole Wizard list is all. Cleric fits better thematically, IMO.

True enough. For the wizard spells, what level spells? Do they just add the Wizard list on top of the Paladin list? Is it just one spell they get? Does it count against their spell slots?

What if the hypothetical Oath of the Arcane, gave Spell Secrets, which are available from the Wizard or Bard list?

I haven't got my PHB handy, but it would be a fun exercise in creating an Arcane Paladin, very appropriate in Athas.

One option, creating an Arcane Paladin spell list, possibly look at the Warlock for inspiration, the spell secrets idea could be used to create some variety. Maybe the Cantrips available are more limited to Classic Cantrips such as Light, Message, Blade Ward would be there, but I doubt they would have every single Combat cantrip and unless they have a Warlock pact, I doubt they would have Eldritch Blast. If O get a chance, I'll check my PHB and DMG and have a go at creating a balanced Gish Spellsword or Arcane Blade.

Oki boys... i didn't wanted an arcane paladin, but something more of a swordmage... Basicly a fighter who channel spells with his weapon. much like the EK, but more melee...

But i'm force to admit on you replies: 1) it's OP as is, 2) arcane paladin sound interesting, never taugh of him like that...

Thanks for all the comments, will rework the class, and abilities...

It sounds like you want the Smite spells. That's what it does. Thunderous Smite, if that's not magic power delivered by a sword, I don't know what is.

Swordmage...

Level 3:

Arcane Shielding: You can cast mage armor at-will.

Elemental Smite: When you use divine smite, or improved divine smite, you can choose to deal fire, lighting, or cold damage instead of radiant.

Channel Divinty:

Aegeas of Shielding:  As a bonus action, you magicly mark a creature within 60' of you.  If that creature deals damage to a creature other then yourself, and is withing 60' of you, you  can use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1/2.

Aegeas of Assault: As a bonus action, you magically mark a creature within 60' of you.  If that creature deals damage to a creature other then yourself, and is withing 60' of you, you can use your reaction to teleport next to that creature, and make a melee attack against it.

Aegeas of EnsaringAs a bonus action, you magically mark a creature within 60' of you.  If that creature attacks a creature other then yourself, and is withing 60' of you, you can use your reaction to teleport the creature next to you, and you become the target of the attack instead.

Stole this stuff from this thread and some Oath of the Weave stuff on GitP, what are we thinking? OP?

Oath of Arcana, Paladin Subclass

Oath Spells
lvl 1: Magic Missile, Featherfall
lvl 2: Mirror Image, Misty Step
lvl 3: Counterspell, Haste
lvl 4: Evard's Black Tentacles, Dimension Door
lvl 5: Cloudkill, Wall of Force

Level 3:

Elemental Smite: When you use Divine Smite, or Improved Divine Smite, you choose to deal fire, lightning, or cold damage instead of radiant. Undead and fiends take no extra damage for elemental smites as they do for radiant divine smites.

Channel Divinity:

Spell Combat: You may use your Channel Divinity to grant yourself the ability to make one attack as a bonus action after casting a spell.

Knowledge Pool: You may spend your Channel Divinity anytime to bring any one Wizard spell (of a level you can cast) to your mind as you pull inspiration from the Weave. The spell is added to and does not count against your list of spells prepared. The spell is forgotten after you cast it or after 1 minute, whichever takes longer.

Level 7:

Aura of Arcana: You and friendly creatures within 10 feet are considered to be wielding magic weapons and magic armor with a +1 bonus.  If you already have magic weapons and armor, increase their bonus by 1. At level 18 the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Level 15:

Arcane Recovery
You have learned to regain some of your magical energy by meditating on the Weave. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your paladin level (rounded up), maximum 5th level.

Level 20:

Ultimate Magus

At 20th level, you can adopt the mantle of the Ultimate Magus, taking on an appearance of your choice that reflects raw arcane power. For example, you could be surrounded by glowing mantles of pure magic, your hands could drip runes of power, or your eyes and mouth could be filled with mystical light.

Using your action, you undergo a transformation. For one minute, you gain the following benefits:

·          Choose two cantrips and two spells up to 5th level from any spellcasting class lists, these spells count as prepared, and do not count against your prepared spell limit.

·          You treat all of your spell slots as if they were one level higher; for example, a spell cast out of a 3rd level spell slot would benefit as if it were cast out of a 4th level spell slot.

Why not let you chose from the paladin smite's?  Thunderous smite, branding smite, ect... seem like they would fit perfectly here.

Arcane Weapon Bond: Seems fine.

Elemental Burst -> Divine Favor.

Disrupting Strike: This is already part of the mage slayer feat.  Not sure you want to double dip.  Perhaps allow for your own concentraion.

Arcane Recharge: Ok, if not very flavorful.

Improved Elemental Burst -> elemental weapon.
