Splitting Damage Between Party Members

I'm playing in a 3.5 group and I'm doing my best to try and tank. I'm making use of knight and crusader classes while being a warforged.

My group caster ( a woefully unoptimized blaster wizard... don't get me started ) seems determined to be splattered across every wall we walk beside. He is constantly within striking distance (less than 30 ft move range) from everything that loves to eat squishies... and my DM consistently punishes him for it. He doesn't learn well.

I can only taunt so many things, and some things simply resist my less-than-perfect CHA-based DC.

Is there something, ANYTHING, that would let me funnel like half of the damage he would take to myself? Our group's durability is high but our healing is poor. We can't afford to keep mending him, and other than breaking his legs and dragging him around... we're kind of at a loss.

We've all known each other forever. So asking him to leave the group would be out of the question. Making adjustments to his character never seems to do much, he always plays the same way.

Is there an actual item (spells aren't this group's forte), that would let me take some of his damage? If not, what can you Wizards recommend would be a suitable cost for say, a pair of rings that would do that? 1 sender, 1 receiver. Please use as many examples to justify cost as possible.

We're using any Wizard souce, even Dragon Magazines. Go obscure if you have to. I just need a way to make him not-dead, on a 20k or less budget. If I could just buy him wings, etherealness, or some like, I'd go for it, but that requires him to be where he is supposed to be. I would rather just eat half the damage and patch him up than try to rez him stuck to a wall or up on a ledge somewhere.

I thought there was a cleric spell that did something similar. Would there be a way to put that on an item?
