+2 = +1.7AC +3 = +2.4AC +4 = +3,0AC +5 = +3.4AC +6 = +3.8AC
War cleric, 4 attacks per short rest... +10 = +4.7 to-hit.
Against less attacks (like a Duel), DD is more favorable. Against more attacks it's worse.
Assumptions: 1: Open rolls. I assume you don't waste use the feature to gain +4 AC when you need +8. If your DM hides your numbers, these lose alot of their value. 2: Bounded accuracy. If you are only hit on a 18+, and gain +6 AC, you've effecivly only gained +2. So compair it as a +2.
Notes: Competing actions/resources. Keep in mind competing resources like a bard granting you oppertunity attacks, or a rogue's uncanny dodge. Likewise, turn undead reduces the war clerics channel divinity. Similar features. These numbers can apply to similar features, such as a wizard shield spell vs mage armor.
Todo: +Dice: Still working on how much guidance, bless, and bardic insperation (i.e. +1d4) is worth.
Defensive Dualist = 1-(1-(bonus*0.05))^number of attacks = 1-chance to not use it = chance to use it. +AC = (bonus*0.05)*number of attacks. | #9FrogReaverNov 18, 2014 11:05:56 | Starting off: defensive duelist is worthless against a monster that can only hit you on a crit. This means defensive duelist is worthless when monsters have 5% chance to hit.
On a monster that can hit you 10% of the time the calculation will be a little more involved. First we will need to know the chance we will be hit with an attack that defensive duelist can turn into a miss. Since 5% of the time we will be crit that leaves 5% of the time we will be hit with an attack that defensive duelist can turn into a miss.
So assuming a single attack each round defensive duelist will:
5% chacne to hit: no effect 10% chance to hit: equal to +1 AC 15% chacne to hit: equal to +2 AC 20% chance to hit: equal to +3 AC 25% chance to hit equal to +4 AC 30% chance to hit equal to +5 AC 35% chance to hit equal to +6 AC 40% chance to hit equal to +6 AC ....the rest are equal to +6 AC (unless the monsters chacne to hit me goes over 95%, in which case defensive duelist bonus will drop to near worthless)
However the real comparison is how much does defensive duelist help on multiple attacks against the various to hit chances. Those calculations will come later.

I have calculated that at 50 percent chance to be hit per attack a +6 one time reaction bonus from defensive duelist is equivalent to +5.1 ac when facing 2 attacks.
Thats actually much better than I expected |

| #26RhennyNov 19, 2014 15:56:59 | Not sure about math, but a PC I'm playing in Horde of the Dragon Queen has DD because it fits with his character concept. We've played 7 sessions (about 20 hours). He is 3rd level.
Not once has the dang feat deflected a single attack. I must be the most unlucky player on the planet. Granted his AC is 18 and he gets only +2 from the feat. I'm sure it will feel a little better when he has +3 or +4.

My results are vastly different than mellored's.
Ill discuss my methodology for now.
My method does not factor in crits though it seems possible to add them.
With that said I used two formulas. The first one is simple:
#attacks * (chance to hit after static ac bonus is factored in)
If this was multiplied by avg hit dmg then it would be the #attacks * dpr. THis formula and its derivation are very simple.
The other formula took some thinking. So I'm going to take baby steps as I lead up to its derivation.
Part 1 (Chance a monster hits me with the ac after the dynamic bonus is factored in)^(#attacks)
This tells me the chance that I will never get to use defensive duelist to negate an attack. Keep this in mind because it's important.
