I am running an AL human fighter (archer focus - bow - and battlemaster). He is about to hit 6th level. Using sharpshooterer and having high dex has worked well for him at range. I'd like to round him out a bit more to deal with Melee when forced to be in melee (such as when surprised, charged, etc) and possibly help with his saves (especially against breath weapons and magic).
What suggestions do you have for making him more versatile?
I was thinking the crossbow expert feat might make sense and just have him keep using a bow in melee but that doesn't solve any of the magic or breath weapons challenges.
Another thought is to take a level of cleric (storm or light) and use a combination of spells and domain abilities to help him keep distance and overcome some of these challenges.
I am open to him taking a level in another class (has a wisdom of 14 so something that uses wisdom could make sense). He doesn't have any magic items yet but should have a bow+1 shortly. I can likely come up with guantlets of ogre power as well.
Thoughts?

If you are planning to multi-class caster, the crossbow feat would apply to Ranged Spell Attacks as well as your bow, so I don't know if that ups it's value to you.
