| #1drizzt_zyloApr 06, 2015 18:40:45 | I was building my character and asked a few questions of my DM and around the boards figuring out rules n such so here is the build. 3 or 4 battle master fighter 5 lore bard 11 or 12 vengeance paladin. The thought is he is a grissled commander. His armor and weapons will likely end up being half plate a shield and a staff. He would take commanders strike maneuvering attack and rally. His two fighting styles is up in the air for dueling protection and defense. He would have healing buffs n debuffs. He would have a bit in every skill. Auras. 2/3 attacks plus smite and improved smite. I think he would gain 4 feats which I was gonna b toughness durable war caster and pole arm master for the can trip oa. He was starting class is fighter for con save prof. His cape is a banner that provides a few support abilities like 1 per long rest bless and ability to use second wind to keep someone else standing. I've thought about other classes to include instead of bard but thus far think its pretty solid though DM don't think so. Help me to fulfill my desire to be the best supporty tank I can be. Thanks in advance. I tried to be as descriptive and as clear as possible sorry if its a bit muddy if I need to clarify just ask |

I recommend doing Paladin 1-5 (Extra Attack & Level 2 Paladin Spells), Bard 1-6 (Level 3 Bard Spells + Level 4 slots + Secrets!!!!), Paladin 6-8 (the first Auras and third ASI), Bard 7-8 (Level 4 spells and last ASI), Paladin 9-11 (Improved Smite & Auras), Fighter 1-3 (I guess if you really want it. Otherwise Bard 7-9 for 5th level spells).
I know you want Con saves, but your Paladin adds Cha to your save, so will get you almost the same thing if you focus on Cha; it's not worth delaying 2nd level Paladin spells and Extra Attack for. You will have 4 feat/ability score bumps - I would put 2 towards maxing Cha, get Inspiring Leader and Sentinel. For Mystic Secrets you can take Shilleleigh (sp?) to make your staff attacks work of Cha and a second spell (Find Familiar is always useful and flavorful and you don't have rituals...) |

The reason I have fighter in there was not originally for the con prof. It was a one shot character turned story arc using battle master for improving allies keeping them in the fight and tanking with high HP high ac and I originally had goading attack until I seen the short duration. Every good commander knows that you can't win a war if your the only one still alive. |

Second, you are more likely to hit with a melee weapon, since you will likely have a magical one and there are lots of ways to get bonuses and advantage (Bless being the most common)
Third, your damage from a melee hit won't be too far behind your damage from a cantrip, if it is behind at all. Remember that at Level 11 Paladin, your melee strikes get 1d8 from improved smite and will always add your attribute bonus.
Last, you are investing two of your four possible feats. Inspiring Leader is really that good and fits the theme. Think of +2 Cha as a feat that gave you +1 to attack & damage (once you get shilleleigh with Bard 6), spell save DC, skill checks and an extra prepared spell. It's too good to pass up. That's 3 out of your 4 feat choices... the only way to have 2 more feats to make the combo happen is to play Varient human... not a bad option, but Half-Elf is good, too, and since we started talking about 4 feats, I stuck with it. |
