I am going to be making a Deep Gnome Illusionist Wizard for Princes of the Apocalypse. I plan to max out INT, and pick up the Svirfneblin Magic feat for at-will Nondetection. If I use the stat array 8/15/13/15/10/10 (STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHA) then I can up my CON mod and gain a major save by taking Resilient (CON) while still maxing out INT.

Would it be better to max INT by taking all three +1 INT feats (Keen Mind, Linguist, Observant) and going straight Wizard all 20 levels or to max INT by dumping points into it? If I dump points, I can max it out with one fewer Ability Score Improvement feature which will allow me to stop at Wizard 18 and dip two levels of Warlock for at-will Disguise Self and at-will Silent Image. If I do that, I'll also lose out on the Wizard capstone ability.

I wouldn't worry about level 20, you probably won't reach it.

Your feat choices are definitely optional... I would probably take 1 feat & +2 int, then take Alert at 12. If you get to 16, I would be very surprised... but there's always Warcaster or resilient con if you do. And you almost definitely won't make 19 unless you continue playing after PoA is done.

Or +1 Int & +1 con at level 4 rather than the feat. Totally a roleplay choice, not a mechanical one...
