| #3IxidorRSOct 24, 2014 18:34:09 | Battle Magic+Blade Spell: needs some clarification on what kind of attack you're making.
Another Archetype could be Bladesinger like in 4e. Instead of Battle Magic and Blade Spell he could have "spell-likeeffects" that can go off every turn. Make the effects aboutt the same power level as Battle Master but with a more magical twist.
Don't be afraid to require a save for these sorts of things. It's the 5th Edition way. The Bladesinger's Bladesongs would get their damage in and then the effect would probably have a save.
At early levels, maybe make it require a bonus action. As they get higher in level they won't need a bonus action to add one (making their OAs stronger) Bladesong but can add one or more additional ones with a bonus action.
Also, an Aegis Swordmage wouldn't make me unhappy. Reactions to reduce damage or give defensive bonuses to allies sounds right on spot and since you've only got one reaction, it's fine to not have a "marking" mechanic. You could also do it as an aura or just a range of 60' or something. |
| #4IxidorRSOct 24, 2014 19:45:51 | Thinking about Intelligent Blademaster again, I'd probably do it differenetly. I wouldn't split the parts up like that. To me, spellcasting + IB is the core of the class.
At Level 1, gain these features Armor Profiency: Light/Medium Weapon Profiency: All one-handed or Versatile Intelligent Blademaster: While you are wielding a one-handed bladed weapon or a versatile bladed weapon and weilding no other weapons, you may use your Intelligence modifier in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier while making weapon attacks. Arcane Ward: You may use your Intelligence modifier in place of your Dexterity modifier for determining your AC. In addition, while you wield a bladed weapon and no other weapon or shield, you gain a +1 bonus to AC. While you wield a bladed weapon in one hand and have a hand free, you gain a +3 bonus to AC instead. Spellcasting: As you've stated.
I'd like to say Weapon Bond should also allow it to work as a focus, but EK doesn't get that. Not sure if that would be okay or not. I think until you have War Caster you probably just have to use a free hand for somatic and material components.
I would offer more options in Fighting Style, including one for one-handed and one for versatile wielding. Dueling and Great Weapon Fighting are the two most obvious choices. Protection could be meaningful, with the caveat that you must have a hand free instead of wielding a shield? Defensive FS is also fine, if uninteresting. |

I was in a pretty creative mood when I got home from playing magic with a friend. So I sorted the issue with lacking Schools (what Ive deicded to call the variant options for now.) I did read your bit first.
I settled out Duskblade, I flipped some posistions around (though I may flip them back.) I think that over all this makes more sense now. But if its still not clear. Battle Magic, Spell Strike, and essentially full round actions. They eat up your action, and your bonus action. They are essentially all out attacks. The Arcana system is gone completely. When I took a better look at the Wizard I saw that it was stepping ALLLLL over it's toes. Instead now 3 out of the 4 paths get to cast a single Upper level spell per day. Like I mentioned before, I have 2 spellcasting tables now. Annnd I sort of like it this way. That SHOULD be all the changes I made, take a look tell me what you think when you can. |
| #6jeremyc13Oct 25, 2014 2:25:07 | Oh! I also rearranged the first spellcasting table. Now its not a rip of the Warlock and balances the growth of the class MUCH more. |
